underrated game. this is truly amazing|
very cool, just wish I could disable lives to zone into dance pacman without worrying so much about a game over, amazing otherwise
The mazes from Tengen Ms. Pac-Man would be a neat extra, as well as converted versions of the ones from the Lynx's Ms Pac-Man, The Game Gear Mazes, the GBC Mazes, and the modified ones from Pac-Man 2's Pac Jr.
Suggestion: I think Super Pac-Man and Pac & Pal must be in the separate game, because it's too hard to do that on PacMan 5 as you said.
Pac-Man 5 (that’s a prototype name) is a Pac-Man game which aims to keep gameplay VERY close to the original (Down to the bugs and strategies), while adding extra features and multiple game modes. Such as jumping, additional ghosts (Alla pacmania), different layouts, etcetera.
Most notably, it also features Ms. Pac-Man and Jr. Pac-Man game modes, which also replicate the arcade originals with the same level of faithfulness.
Think of it like a “sandbox pacman” thing, but it is 100% playable and complete on its own as of today.
My original intention was to keep the gameplay as close as the original, ranging from ghost behavior, to speed and fright time and stuff. Graphics are x4 the original game's size. I've included a dip-switch-like configuration screen to further tweak the gameplay.
I've codenamed it Pac-Man 5 because there were 5 ghosts and because it was 7 AM and I hadn't had any sleep at all jeez.
Features:
Super faithful gameplay! Ghosts will scatter to their respective corners and chase pacman according to their own strategies and personalities. You could even win with those how-to-win-at-pacman guides!
Super awkward
and super temporarydip-switch like menu to play the game just the way you want it! You want to add more ghosts? You read Jamey Pittman's Pac-Man dossier and want to fix the facing-up Pinky/Inky bug? You want to enable jumping? You can do it! (But Green/Gray ghosts jump to, beware!)Don't talk about debug mode ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Difficulty increases exactly like it does on the real thing! This means ghost speed, fright time (How long ghosts remain vulnerable after eating a power pellet), Pac-Man speed, delays, etcetera, are all akin to the arcade original. There's even a hard-mode dip switch setting that works exactly like the original too!
Split-screen? Yeah it is there, 1:1 but you surely can't get to it can you?? (Post a screenshot if you do!!)
High(ish)-definition graphics! Up to four times the quality of the original games, to cover up the an entire 1280x720 screen, with smart panning and cute pixelly "fruit"!
Play Ms. Pac-Man on it's entirety! Includes all maze layouts and updated ghost logic to match the arcade original, and also the wandering fruit.
Jr. Pac-Man!! I don't think I've ever seen a PC implementation of Jr. Pac-Man ever before, but here's one! And in High definition. And with the wandering "fruit" changing pellets into big pellets!
Cutscenes remastered! Even the cheesy ones!
Dance Pac-Man! ...wait what? Yeah it's a special game mode that cycles between all possible maze layouts of the game.
It's not pac-man plus even though the color scheme reminds of that haha
To-do:
Make an actual menu system, so that the game is not just a sandbox game and it feels more finished on itself.
Achievements? Trophies? Dunno.
Catch all the bugs.
Make the remaining missing cutscenes from classic Pac-Man. (Ms. Pac-Man and Jr. Pac-Man cutscenes are all done).
More game modes? I've been suggested to do Pac-Man plus style powerups and stuff like that. That's possible... but super Pac-Man and Pac-Pal is out of the question for now, as it runs on entirely different hardware and the gameplay itself is pretty different (Similar, but would require rewriting a big chunk of the actual code to make it work).
Pac-Mania layouts? The ghosts and their logic is already there, so all it needs to be done is mapping mostly. The graphics are out of the question tho.
Rework the music. Currently it's using tracks borrowed from other games, but definitely could use having an original tracker music to reduce filesize.
Anyway, bottom line, it's a Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man/Jr. Pac-Man sandbox game. Faithful to the arcade originals, fun to play. Enjoy, and thanks for playing!
Also check out the pac-man dossier, also don hodges page about pacman.
Without their work this game wouldn't have been possible!
