I wanted to take a quick break to talk about the progress on the game and basically what we have managed to achieve in these past 10 days. I also want to talk quickly about how we came up with the idea for this particular game, and what problems we have run into along the way.
To since my last post I have added a lot of thing, loads of new trophies, highscore table, kill counter. Anything the game could possibly need, now we are just on to final touches and any extra features we want in the game. I hope that when this game is finished, I can actually release the game fully with a lot more features.
So in the 10 days we have had, I actually managed to come up with a fairly decent idea (for the first time). We then embarked on our journey to make the game as best we could. We started off using color coded blocks, and nothing worked. We kept running into errors, and even to this point we dont think we will finish in time. The fact that it had to be gameboy themed and only four colors put more preassure on our graphics designer, although we managed to push through. About 3 days in I completely rewrote the game from the ground up, as I didnt like the code we had. I then added shooting, then made a shooting sound effect. My baby was being born (a bit akward?). We added graphics which to be honest made my eyes hurt at first because I have never seen nor used a gameboy (in my whole entire life). I worked on a main menu, it was difficult to think of an easy way to do it, I like to have a small amout of code, not messy, but that means that the game wont be so good. But I found an efficient and easy way to make the menu work, I created graphics for the menu, which I am really proud of (I usually suck at doing graphics). Then came the final day (today). I really wanted to work in some gamejolt api, so thats what I did, running into loads of errors along the way, but I came this far and nothing is going to stop me! I added a kill counter, ironed out a few bugs, and here we are. About an hour away from finishing (We will be uploading ours about 30 mins before just to make sure everything goes smoothly). In the next hour I want to work on more formations for the plane, and just making things smoother.
I wish all other developers entering the jam the best of luck, and may the best man (or men if you are joining as a group like me) win.
