A Dungeons & Dreamscapes collage.

(Update on development in article!)

Given D&D's main inspiration is the setup of Deltarune, I kinda set a deadline for myself to get something substantial out before the Chapter 3 & 4 release. I wished I could have come out with something bigger, like a concept trailer, but this lore collage is the best I can do.

The actual coding of D&D has hit a snag. My computer denied the installation of a libGDX Java package, and I accidentally forgot to veto the denial. I'm trying to find a way to force the installation again, but for now I can't work on the project.

The concepting of D&D has been going strong, however. To borrow some phrases from Deltarune, I've got almost all of the "Light World" lore down and a rough idea of the "Dark World" lore. I still need to do a bit more research into the Dungeons and Dragons moral panic (the backdrop of my story) and how roleplaying games were played during that time.

About the actual plot of D&D: I wouldn't call it a Deltarune fangame per se. It's more just based on the "setup" of Chapter 1 and the tropes of the characters; the gameplay will be very different from Deltarune's, with a mix of OFF's pseudo-live combat and the classic top-down swordplay of the first Zelda game. The plot will also (eventually) feature overt horror elements. While Deltarune does have some horror elements near the end of each chapter, D&D's horror elements will be much more prolonged and tied to the gameplay instead of the lore.

While I won't give much details as to not spoil the game for everyone, in the final act of D&D the party will discover something truly supernatural, and will be put in an extreme life-or-death scenario. However, this "true" horror will be seen under the lens of the fake RPG world (aka the "Dark World"), forcing the player to franticly try to figure out what's real and what's fake with the lives of their party on the line.

Of course, the fear with basing a story on the setup of another unfinished story is that there's a chance that Deltarune might go the same or a similar route to the route I'm planning to take D&D. While I don't think it's likely, it is possible. I'm obviously going to play Chapters 3 & 4 when they release, so I can make sure D&D won't tread on Deltarune's toes too much. Since I'm also planning to play without spoilers, I hope some overt horror elements aren't hidden in some wacky way like in the Snowgrave route. But I also need to get on with my life and make more Myrtlebank County Public Records episodes. I'm not sure if I should speedrun it or 100% the new chapters. My current plan is to complete as much content as fast as I can, but I'm not sure how exactly I will do that.

Anyways, I hope this image shows you just enough of the D&D world to get a spoiler-free idea of what's in store should the game ever come out. I'm hoping I can get some work done over the summer (best case scenario create a V1 of the battle engine). But first, of course, I have to finish the new chapters of D&D's inspiration, Deltarune.

Cheers,

Bloby1337.

Just in case anyone was wondering, this is where the inspiration for the game's title comes from.

Here's my insanely long and spoiler-heavy Oakburn Opus/VHS Tales theory!

To put it lightly, it's that Martha Astor appears in "The Starving Five".

Don't look at the 2nd image or read the theory unless you've seen "T. S. 5" and Oakburn Opus III!
