Metropolis is a work of fiction set in the TRTF universe. The protagonist, Friedrich Vogler, is a former German soldier. He is not a Nazi. He did not join the Party. He did not commit war crimes. But he served a criminal regime, and he knew it, or suspected it, which may be worse.
This story does not seek to excuse or justify the actions of Nazi Germany. It is an exploration of how ordinary people become complicit in evil: not through malice, but through obedience, fear, and the desperate will to survive.
Friedrich is not a hero. He is not a victim. He is a man who had choices, and made the wrong ones, again and again.
If you are looking for a story about a "good German," this is not it. If you are looking for a story about how a man loses himself, one small compromise at a time, then welcome.
