So, recently the infamous ship Slave I's name has been "changed" to Firespray Gunship, which has caused quite an uproar in the Star Wars community! And recently in the new Book Of Boba Fett show, Boba mentioned his ship using the new name... But what if I told you Disney didn't change the name? Well the truth is they haven't....
You see, Boba's ship is one of 6 of that specific ship model, the name of said model being called Firespay Gunships.. Now just like most vessels, while the model name may be one thing the owner/captain of said vessel usually creates a name of their own! So that being said, Boba or Jango named a ship that is of the Firespray Gunship model Slave I. Meaning that while the model name of the ship is Firespray Gunship, meaning that all 6 ships of the same model had that same model name, Boba's ship is still named Slave I....
Now why did Boba use the model name in episode 4 of the Book Of Boba Fett, rather than the name created by him or a previous owner? Well, one it's Disney, so what do you expect? I doubt Jon Favreau and his writing would've used the model name in the show's writing rather than the name Slave I if Disney wasn't the company producing the show, so don't blame the writers for them using the model name rather than Boba's particular name for the ship... Another reason is, that it may have been just easier for Boba to state the model rather than the ship's name, even though Fennec may have known the ship's name although perhaps he didn't realize that...
Anyway, while Disney may choose to use the ship's model name... Boba's ship is still formally named Slave I and Disney did not just make up the new name so it would be more racial friendly, for the model name has been around for years, but in the end the ship is still named Slave I and the model name is Firespray Gunship....
