Andal (8th century CE) was a revered Tamil poetess and the only female Alvar among the twelve Vaishnavite saint-poets of South India, known for her deep devotion to Lord Vishnu. Born in Srivilliputhur, legend holds that she was found as a baby in a garden by the priest Vishnuchittar (Periyalvar), who raised her as his daughter. From a young age, Andal composed passionate hymns expressing her longing for union with the divine, especially through the person of Vishnu as Ranganatha. Her poetic works — particularly the Tiruppavai and Nachiyar Tirumozhi — are celebrated as masterpieces of Tamil devotional literature, blending lyrical beauty with intense spiritual emotion. Andal defied social norms by declaring herself the bride of the deity, ultimately merging with the idol of Ranganatha at Srirangam, according to tradition. Today, she is worshipped as both a saint and a goddess, and her legacy continues to inspire bhakti (devotional) movements across South India.
