Over the next few months we will be taking a look at art fundamentals.
Art fundamentals are basic concepts you'll use to create any type of art, things like anatomy, form, design, shading, colour and composition are some fundamentals any artist needs in order to create.
A lot of you seemed interested in learning about shading but we are going to take a step back this week and start with form and anatomy, because no matter how good your shading is your art will never look right without the proper anatomical composition.
So lets start. When we talk about anatomy I'm referring to the anatomy of anything, from the human form to a car or even a rock. For us to draw something we need to know what it looks like, we do this by studying what we see.
A way for us to understand what we are seeing is to turn things into basic 3D shapes. Like this:
Everything can be broken down into 3 basic shapes. A sphere, a cylinder and a cube. You can learn more about this in Proko's Structure Basics tutorial on YouTube. Proko's whole channel is geared towards teaching artists of any level so I highly recommend looking through his videos. You can also check out this video "6 Steps to Drawing Anything" that explains form very well.
By doing this exercise, you'll help your brain break down any image, no matter how complex, and make it easier for you to understand what you're drawing.
This week the assignment
Draw the simple 3D shapes for these 5 images as I did in the image above, and post your finals in the comments below.
Extra Credit
Practice makes perfect so why not practice some more. Find 5 of your own reference photos and do the same thing with them.
