Azzy's Dustswap: Dusttrust - Critisms and suggestions.

@azzy2935 Don't use these if you don't want to, but at least consider them for your game.

(I made this because it's too long for a regular comment on the game page)

First of all, I just wanna say, I love this fangame SO much. I usually don't like Dusttrust fangames, due to Sans being a whiny bitch and his attacks usually being too unfair to play. But this is such a refreshing take, where instead of Sans being an edge lord, he's doing this because of his psychotic brother haunting him. Throughout the fight, I noticed that Sans was still, well...Sans. Someone who hurt so many people not because he wanted to, but because he knew it would be worth it just to erase the anomaly. The fact that he looked for Toriel, but was glad he never found her, further proves this.

Not to mention, the attacks are engaging and balanced compared to most Dusttrust takes. I had FUN playing it.

However, as much as I like how refreshing and fun this is, I still have my thoughts on what could be better.

The Asgore encounter

This was by far my least favorite encounter. The actual fight (when I attacked), was not engaging, and the trident hitbox was stupidly big. I also don't like how Asgore is...racist. I mean, in Undertale, he killed six human children, but that wasn't because he wanted to, he just made a promise he couldn't keep and was too scared to go back on. So seeing him here attack you mercilessly isn't exactly how I imagine Asgore would react. I think a good way to go about this encounter is for Asgore to know he has to kill you, but doesn't want to, and looks down sadly as he attacks.

And in the mercy ending of this encounter, Asgore just...roasts you Disbelief style. I'm not sure Asgore is one to laugh maniacally, nor assume it was you who attacked him (especially since he was attacked from behind, and was looking straight at you). I think a good way for this ending to play out is for Asgore to look behind him, and feel betrayed by his good friend Papyrus.

Personal suggestion: Make the RUINS blue. You don't have to, of course, this is YOUR take after all. I just got tired of bright pink from UT.

Papyrus encounter

One of the spookiest encounters, and an interesting one, too. I don't have any criticisms other than to make an actual, reasonable way for Papyrus to avoid your attack, instead of just a red screen.

Personal suggestion: Re-use your Papyrus sprite from the Dustswap Papyrus VS. Sans game you made. I just really like that sprite, and the sprite used here looks just a bit uncanny for my taste.

Sans VS. Papyrus cutscene

Honestly? I would've preferred if THIS was the Papyrus encounter. Because it seems to me that Sans just randomly took down this absolute beast in a way that isn't explained.

Not to mention, this is like, one of the only times Sans appears, the other being his boss fight.

No criticisms really. Just wish Sans had more screen time so I could care about him more in the moment he kills Papyrus. Who knows? You could give him an extra encounter in Waterfall in the DLC.

Final boss

The best encounter in the game, unironically. The menu bones are surprising in a fun way, the dialogue is *chef's kiss* (though could use a rework grammar-wise) and best of all, it doesn't fall into the exact progression of Disbelief!

However, during the intermission, I noticed that the game forgot it was Underswap. Sans refers to Frisk as the vessel and Chara as the puppetmaster, which is lore-inaccurate to Underswap, where Frisk and Chara switch roles. You COULD say this is just your take, but even then, your take clearly shows Chara in Frisk's role in the Overworld.

Another problem is the surface and the music. The "swapped" version is supposed to be an easter egg? If this is Underswap already, I'd say reverse the way the surface looks and the music plays with the easter egg "Night Surface" and "Beta Undertale".

All I really ask here is that you change up Sans's dialogue to fit Underswap's lore (reverse the instances of "Frisk" and "Chara"), and reverse the surface looks.

One last thing, I don't think it makes sense for Sans to have infinite HP. You can still have the human deal only 99 damage (so Sans stays unkillable gameplay-wise), just add an actual HP bar. I'd say 1500 is enough.

Ending

Loved the final boss fight, but I don't like the ending as much. Sans takes your SOUL after so much pain and a long battle, he absorbs the SOULs, and then...breaks the barrier? Wait, why would he do that? Most of the entire underground is empty thanks to him and Chara. Why would he break the barrier for no one to see except him? Shouldn't he use his godlike powers to reset the timeline and erase the anomaly from existence? Wasn't that Papyrus's GOAL?

Honestly, I think you should change the ending to a reset where he selectively erases Chara from the timeline, and then we can have a cutscene where Sans and Papyrus are happy, but the memories still haunt Sans.

I also have an idea for a secret ending. If you don't use any items, you could kill Sans and reach the end of the game, where Chara/Frisk wins, and keeps the timeline in a new loop.

Game Over screen

It's broken. Every time I die, it gives me the Asgore game over, no matter which fight I'm playing. please fix this.

With that being said, I also have some ideas for the DLC.

Fun suggestions that you can add to the DLC (if you want)

You said this was your take on Dustswap AND Dusttrust, right? Let's focus on Dustswap for a minute.

1. Papyrus

To be honest, as much as I like how spooky maniacal Papyrus is, I don't think it makes sense for him to hate monsters. I think it should be handled the way Team Delusional Dusttale is handled, Papyrus wakes up with visions of the anomaly committing genocide, and Papyrus tries to take action, with the help of Temmie (Flowey's role, I know Flowey exists as Asriel still, but I think you could keep Temmie as Monster kid in Underswap without any issues).

So instead of Papyrus being maniacal, I was thinking he could be intimidating but scared, angry about his situation, but sad that he has to fix it in such an immoral way. Despite everything, however, still determined to set the record straight. Similar to how Papyrus is in Halo's Dustbelief.

And another thing, if you so choose to change the Sans VS. Papyrus cutscene into an encounter (more about that later), I thought you could add an ending where Papyrus wins, and the game turns into a Dustswap take, where you fight Papyrus at the CORE instead of Sans.

That's all I have to say about Papyrus specifically.

2. Sans's screentime + Extra fights.

If it's possible, could you change the Papyrus encounter to Papyrus against Sans? I personally think it'd be more emotional than the cutscene where Sans inexplicably takes down the beast that is Papyrus. And, it'd make the audience care about Sans more, now that you look at it from his perspective. And I don't think you'd have to do much. I think if you just port your Papyrus encounter over to Dusttrust, it'd get the job done. And, depending on how the fight goes, it could change the course of the story.

Earlier, I mentioned how you could make a Dustswap extension to the game, where Papyrus becomes the final boss. I know that it might be too much for you to code, and as I said before, you don't HAVE to. I just thought it'd be interesting if it was both a Dusttrust game AND a Dustswap game, depending on how the Papyrus VS. Sans fight goes.

And if you can, could you add a short encounter in Waterfall where Sans fights you? I just want Sans to have more screen time. This is Dusttrust after all.

I know this could be too much, but as I said, these ideas are PURELY just fun suggestions! You can do whatever you want with the game, and who knows? Maybe the DLC has much better ideas that it can offer.

If you DO use these ideas, but are worried that it'll take more time, don't be. I don't care how long I have to wait. If the game gets delayed, I know that just means it's getting better.

Conclusion

As I have said multiple times, you don't have to do any of this if you don't want to. I know I said a LOT of things, but please don't pressure yourself with them if it's too much. Just consider them, and let me know what you think!

With all that said, SkeleNova logging off!
