Today is a fun one! Let’s go behind the scenes on one of our most challenging set pieces: Nyah’s Apartment.
The first thing was setting up the pacing in Unity, which means ugly blocks and lighting :(

Above: I wrote out instructions for our environment artist, Nina, on top of the Unity mock up.
I then carefully fitted each art piece to the space, adding the lighting and later, word bubbles.

Above: an early test of the art and pacing as Nyah walks from the stairs into her apartment
The apartment had to be designed so that our future players can walk freely from end to end and so that mom is a center piece of the conversation.

Above: Nina’s initial mockup of the apartment in Blender.
Each bowl, furniture piece, wall and loose object also had to be a separate 3D mesh so that I could script the dramatic physics sequence that leads to Nyah becoming lost in the Crossroads.
