Yeah, Yume Nikki... One of the few games you might never wish to play due to lack of actual story and due to it being mostly a walking simulator...
Despite that, this game has inspired a few RPGs some of which you probably are a die hard fan of.
So we're gonna mention some games here it inspired.
And, of course, the first game we start with is...
Undertale
Yeah, Toby Fox confirmed Yume Nikki being an inspiration. In fact, Toby Fox even once interviewed the developer, Kikiyama. In my knowledge, He's the only one to have ever done this. And that it was a "Yes/No" interview.
And yeah, ik, sounds weird how a game so different inspired Undertale. However, there ARE a few references. For instance, the "Mystery Man" everyone calls Gaster is most likely an Uboa reference. See the designs of the two and check it out for yourself.
Other than that, Frisk and Madotsuki both have a similar detail, closed looking eyes throughout the entire game. Not really significant enough to mention but did it anyway.
And yeah, the true lab. Probably the most Yume Nikki thing in the entire game considering the strange looking enemies.
So now, the second game we mention is...
Deltarune
And it's not even a surprise. If Yume Nikki inspired Undertale, then it did Deltarune too. Both have the same developer after all...
And, it MIGHT be just me, but the starting area of Deltarune Chapter 3 reminds me alot of Yume Nikki "Docks".
Not just that, there's a literal soundtrack that has something completely the same as one of Yume Nikki's soundtracks. You guys remember the egg room and it's music? Compare it with Yume Nikki soundtrack "Eyeball World". Surely I can't be this crazy to be the only one finding something similar...
There probably are a few more references not in my head at the moment. But yeah, in near future, we're probably gonna see even more Yume Nikki references.
So the next game we mention is...
Lisa
Yeah, we're mentioning Lisa series here too. Lisa The First in particular is literally even known to be "Yume Nikki inspired". Infact, it kinda seems literally based on the "r#pe theory" of Yume Nikki. Saving and loading saved files in Lisa The First also seems very much like Yume Nikki.
Lisa The Painful too has a few references. Mostly when Brad is having a nightmare. One nightmare actually shows an enemy you have to fight that seems to be the "Kyuu Kyuu kun" reference. Other than that, you use a bicycle in the game to roam around faster just like in Yume Nikki, where once you get the bicycle effect, you can use it to roam around faster.
I'd say, the mutants are also sort of Yume Nikki inspired for how messed up they look, but there's a good chance they reference more to OFF. Or maybe they're different altogether.
Finally, the last game we mention here is...
OMORI
My personal favorite RPG of all time even now. And to be honest? Probably the biggest and most Yume Nikki inspired game out of all I've mentioned out here.
I don't really need much statements from anyone to confirm for myself that Yume Nikki was one of the main games to inspire OMORI, because the game confirms that itself.
The game's about a Hikikomori and about dreaming just like Yume Nikki. Black Space is basically a mixture of Yume Nikki and OFF. Red Maze is basically a shorter but scarier version of Hell from Yume Nikki. All in all, Yume Nikki HAS something to do with OMORI in just so many parts of the game.
So... Which one's the best Yume Nikki successor for you?
Me? I mentioned above. OMORI is my most favourite RPG of all time. So for me, OMORI is the best Yume Nikki successor.
