Disney's New spin-off to "The Mandalorian" A.K.A "The Book Of Boba Fett" has been met with some... mixed reception, and is considered to be at the moment is mainly considered to be a failure and disappointment within the Star Wars community, and I do agree it is no where near as good as "The Mandalorian" and I have been a bit disappointed with this spin-off series and with 3 episodes left I have began to wonder.. Will they be able to salvage the show?.... And will they be able to do it without shoving fanservice down our throats? Well today I am going to discuss whether or not I believe that this show can be salvaged, and maybe even saved....
Today's discussion will be put in three categories, 1. Why is the show on a verge of failing?,
2. Is The Show Beyond Salvaging?,
3. How Fan-service trying to save the show could make the show worse and how that can be avoided!
So, Let us begin!
1. Why is the show on a verge of failing?
I think the reason why the show isn't doing very well is, because of multiple reasons, but I think it is because the way they're telling the story and lack of present day progression...
And while those aren't necessarily bad things, in fact I was hoping for the story to be told differently so the show could differentiate itself from "The Mandalorian". Unfortunately I think the way they're trying to differentiate the shows has not been the most successful. While I personally have liked the flashbacks and the writers showing us things we either know or not know in more depth, the problem I have, and I think a lot of others have is... while we're getting development in the past and showing us more of the character Boba has become, we've barely got any development in present day... which is a serious problem... I think a lot of people (As Do I) wish that they balanced out both the flashback and present day development...
Another major problem I see is that Boba seems to be quite out of character, and while they have explained why to some extent, I feel as if they just didn't explain it well enough to make sense for such a drastic change in his persona, it seems like they wanted to make him a more emotionally relatable character but couldn't fit in an entire character development arc for him so tried to squeeze it into the first 2 episodes via flashbacks with the tuskins, I'd much rather see his development start in the flashbacks, continue in "The Mandalorian" and then finish up throughout the present day ending his development within the last or second last episode of "The Book Of Boba Fett" I just feel like they're trying to flesh out Boba Fett but they also want to keep his old character and also want to continue with a new story that connects to other canon events.... and while I could see Boba becoming the person he is in the show, I think they should've made a more gradual development for his character and shown the development off a lot more!
Finally, the story has never actually kicked off, like at all... All we know is there is some sketchy thing the pikes are doing, and while I like mystery in shows, we're already over half way through the show and have no idea what is actually happening in Mos Espa... At this point I just feel like they're trying to build up to this big fight with the pikes, but we won't really know why they're bad, and if it is explained there is a chance the reason they're the enemy will be rushed and problematic... Which is unfortunate....
I see the main problem as of right now is that, the writers are trying to balance reviving Boba, developing characters who have had little development and continuing with a complex sketchy underground crime based plot, and it's just too much to fit into 7 episodes... I honestly think that the writers have bitten off a bit more than they could chew with this series thus far, and that's a major problem!
2. Is The Show Beyond Salvaging?
No, in fact I believe that while the show is quite flawed at the moment I have faith in Jon and his team, they have proven before that they're able to create a great show with great characters and decent story! I think that if the writers play their cards right, they can salvage the show... if they lay their cars right....
3. How Fan-service trying to save the show could make the show worse and how that can be avoided!
When I first heard "The Mandalorian" theme at the end of 4th episode of the show, I was genuinely excited and still am, but looking back I'm a bit afraid that the writers are just going to try and use Mando or some other well known in the franchise to try and make fans look over the fact that a single character can't fix a shows errors...
So how can this issue be avoided? Well, first of all I'm not saying that characters that fans love and fanservice stuff shouldn't happen, but things in moderation, in both using fan service and how much the fan service affects the show. I have nothing against Mando or some other beloved character coming but the problem appears when they
A) Do stuff like this too often and
B) If the special character who appears takes too much spotlight or stays for too long..
So how do we avoid these things? Well If Mando appears I hope for him to be a side protagonist for an episode or two, but I want him to be more or less out in the battlefield more as a leader for Boba's soldiers, while also contributing to one or two major plot points, while I hope Boba and Fennec are the ones who try to handle the mastermind behind this sketchy operation...
Not only that but I hope we see Boba develop as a leader and warrior, where we weren't able to see the development in his character that I wanted, I hope that we see some new character development in the present days within these last few episodes...
Now we need to talking about one more thing in this category, if Mando isn't the only one who appears for some sort of fan service thing, I don't want the show to continue down this path and then use the safety net of some famous huge character we all love, "The Mandalorian" did that but it not only deserved to do it, the show incorporated it into it's story including foreshadowing and other things. While I think the writers could foreshadow the appearance of a beloved character, I don't think this show deserves it, at least without trying to save itself without fan service...
All of these things are quite easy to do and avoid and I hope the writers are able to pull them off, they just shouldn't give Mando or someone else the spotlight, they should give Boba some development and just create an overarching plot that works!
All in all, I think the writers are more than capable of salvaging this show, and after episode 4 I have a lot of hope, episode for was a great episode and I think that they just need to play everything right and keep things going upward instead of downward!
Although, Remember this is all just my opinion!
