From November 1934 to August 1935, the Tennessee Valley Authority conducted a series of controlled burns in the Kentucky wilderness.
Large smokescreens were dropped as well, blocking any onlookers from viewing the burn area.
Those who watched the smoke closely reported glimmers of reflected light far, far above the treeline.
