THE MAIN CHARACTERS
Meet you.
The first screen you get in the game is your gender selection. You are a teenage kid who has just left home with their Evobeast companion. You can either play as Will or Ann (boy or girl respectively). Whichever you choose, you will be the child of the famous (or infamous, depending on who you talk to) Darwin.
When you were a baby, Darwin up and left you, your mom, and your older brother, Charles, without giving you much reason why.
While Evobeasts is focused more on openness and exploration than a heavy plot, the mystery of what your Dad has been up to is one of the elements that creates a cohesive story to the game. While exploring the world, you’ll come across old friends and enemy’s of Darwin and unravel the mystery.
In fact, it is this curiosity about what happened to your dad that sends you and your brother out on your grand adventure. Once you’re out, you can seek out your dad, thwart an evil plot, help an extremist, rob a train, all of those, none of those, it’s up to you. There are plenty of stories to explore, and most of them tie together to create a cohesive narrative, but there’s also a lot of flexibility.
Your character is really who you make it.
PLAYER IN BATTLE
One of, in our opinion, the coolest things about Evobeasts, is that you, as the protagonist, fight along side your Evobeasts. Unlike your Evobeasts, you don’t gain levels, but rather learn skills and power up through the various equipment scattered throughout the world. This equipment can be bought, found, and, of course, crafted.
We’ll dive into the differences between the mechanics of the character and the Evobeast in another post, but we’ve worked to find a good balance between the two. A given Evobeast is rather defined in it’s role. Based on its stats and skills, it’ll be a tank, caster, healer, buffer, etc. There is, of course, some ability to customize, but it’s limited. The character, on the other hand, has tons of customization options, and it’s all based on what equipment you give him/her and which skills he/she learns. One of the consequences of this is you can choose the coolest two Evobeasts you find, and use the character to fill in the strategic gaps.
This isn’t to say the character is superior to your Evobeasts. There are plenty of things that Evobeasts can do that your character won’t be able to, but he/she has their advantages.
