DOGS of the DARK Devlog (9/17/2023)

Heya, I'm actually gonna be writing a proper "article" for this one due to the things I want to talk about for DotD. Changes to the game, new things I'm adding to the engine, among other things.

First off, I want to say that if you missed it, which you prolly did, DotD was at this year's Sonic Amateur Games Expo, or SAGE. It for the most part kinda flew under the radar for most people. Some people did find the game and followed it (Thank you BTW). But not as many as I expected. Maybe because I misunderstood that Sonic fans attend the expo, not really common RPG fans.

Never the less, I still feel motivated to work on the game, despite its overlooked response at SAGE.

You may have also noticed that the SAGE demo is a newer version of the game. It does contain some of the engine changes I intended to add to the chapter 2 update, like the new Equipment Inventory and Equipment Menu, as well as Demo Saves, but not everything got added.

One of the things I want to add to the update was Elemental Matchups. You may have noticed in the DARKipedia that the enemies have an associated element on them. Most of the enemies are Neutral or Normal types, but there are some special ones in there too.

While I was too busy fixing some issues with the demo to work on the elemental system, they should be implemented into the game soon. You can utilize RUDE and MAGIC moves to take advantage of elemental matchups. Say using Rude Breaker, which will be a Fire elemental move, would be effective against a Life Elemental enemy, but weak against a Water Elemental one. (Good luck using Rude Breaker on Alpha Foxer LMAO).

Think Pokemon, but not Pokemon.

Anyways here's the matchups I slapped together. Comment any changes you might suggest.

Now onto the actual chapters progress. I have developed about half of Chapter 2 now, but I'm incredibly dissatisfied with the character building, or lack-there-of.

Most of the characters in DotD have some sort of ties to Undertale or Deltarune characters, and I built off of those ideas to make the characters their own, like how Dexter is kind of like Ralsei or Sprite is like sans. The main "focus character" as I'll call him, is actually based on a character from an Undertale Fan Game, Dalv, from Undertale Yellow (To the point where his early battle theme, and current one's inspiration are Forlorn, Dalv's battle theme in UT Yellow).

The only one problem with the character is that unlike other characters in the story, he never branched off from Dalv's inspration. Sure I did develop a very different backstory to him, but he has no character to work with.

So I'm gonna be sitting down for a while, rewriting Chapter 2 to give this new character, Bemor, some actual character, and not to be this aggressive "mystery man" the entire time. This doesn't mean I'll be scrapping all of my work, just some of the pointless bits made for past story. Things like puzzles I'm gonna leave as is, and maybe adjust there room layouts to work better with an altered layout or something.

Chapter 2 will take some time, and is actually planned to be a payed release. The game is currently set for a $5 USD pricepoint, at least when Chapter 2 releases. In future updates, mostly when Chapter 3 is finished, the game will sell for $10, but if you get it at the $5 when Chapter 2 releases, you get future updates for free. Call it an "early-bird" special.

I also plan to release the game to Steam at some point, I don't know when, prolly when Chapter 3 is done. Early versions will only be released here however, and Steam will house a demo until the full game is complete.

Despite the paywall for playing Chapter 2, the Chapter 1 Demo will always be free, and is updated alongside the payed game. The save files are no longer one and the same, but can be converted once you buy the game and can continue from where you beat Oreo at the end of Chapter 1.
