Dying to Download, Part 2

Here are 5 more in-development games that have my heart racing.

There were so many good-looking games on the preliminary list for my first Dying to Download post that it was tough to pick just 5. So, I’ve picked 5 more to share with you here.

The qualifications for a game to get on the list are:

  1. The game is listed as “in development” on Game Jolt.

  2. No playable release is publicly available.

  3. I want to play it.

So, without further ado, here are 5 more games that I’m dying to download.

Somnia

In Somnia (heh), you play the child of an abusive parent who finds yourself in an asylum one day with no memory of how you got there. In addition to figuring out what happened in real life, you have to traverse the fantasy/dream world of Somnia and fight the cute but deadly monsters there. The game is being made in RPG Maker XP using all-original assets, and it’s obvious that a lot of love (and pain) has gone into it.

Nihilo

Nihilo appears to offer everything I could ask for in a traditional Japanese-style RPG. It’s an epic story set in a post-apocalyptic world with tons of lore. There is plenty of opportunity for turn-based combat, but no random battles. There are dialogue choices that affect the story and how your characters evolve. And there’s a plethora of mini-games, including playing cards at a bar, shooting motorcycles with a machine gun from the back of a truck, and getting your Metal Gear Solid on (shown above).

Xenophobia

Xenophobia was originally in development for the Adventure Jam, but we’re still waiting for it to be completed. It is (or will be) a point-and-click adventure which takes place on an abandoned island that is home to several mysterious ruins. The soundtrack (already available on the game page is beautiful and eerie, and the pixel art is phenomenal. We can hope that once backterria’s work on Dead Knight (which I’m also looking forward to) is finished, he will turn his attention back to Xenophobia.

Axon (UPDATE: Now called “Plan Be”)

Val Chrysostomou, developer of the awesome Notice Me Detective, is hard at work on this stealth game, which features the use of voice commands. The staff of a research facility has gone all 28 Days Later and it’s your job to guide the last uninfected scientist to safety. The dev has made recent assurances that a demo is forthcoming.

Video Nasty

VideoNasty is a sleuthing game set in 1984, in a northern English town that has a history of tragic events. You’re a cop there, chasing the trail of a brutal serial killer. There are obviously elements of horror, but the game’s focus is on the investigative process. The name comes from the term “video nasty”, which was used to describe a number of horror movies that were banned in the UK in the ’80s. We can expect a demo sometime soon (fingers crossed).

Remember to follow any of these or any other games on Game Jolt that interest you. That way, when the developers post news or finally release playable builds, you’ll be among the first to know!
