This might be a long one, but I've got a lot to say and I'm just gonna be transparent.
I make Undertale fan content. I write AUs. I direct teams to make some cool ass stuff, and I enjoy doing that. Regardless of who or what the subject of said fan content is, unless I don't care for the concept, I will put my heart and soul into everything I do for them. Because I'm passionate about my interests, about Undertale.
Dust AU, normal AU, Fell, Swap, I don't care, I enjoy writing for these characters in different scenarios from the base game.
While I do want to see content in this community increase in diversity, with more non-skelebros focused content, I don't mind it. As long as you're making something you're genuinely passionate about, I'm happy for you and will support you on it.
You are prone to criticism, I may give criticism, but I respect the love and passion you've put into your content.
However, there's some people who definitely don't follow this mindset. Some people push the bounds of criticism and use it as a blatant excuse to attack, harass and demean over, get this, an UNDERTALE FAN PROJECT.
Now, I get it - if you don't like something, you don't have to. You're allowed to criticise content, you're allowed to point out its flaws. But when certain scenarios, RECENT scenarios, where people have been blatantly harassed, in some cases to the point of MENTAL BREAKDOWNS...
Over FAN-MADE CONTENT that THEY wanted to make...
Can you see the issue with that?
I'm not saying you cant be critical. Hell, I've been blatantly harsh to some people regarding this stuff, and quite a few didn't deserve it. Looking back, I don't always agree with things I say in the moment, and am deeply sorry if I've ever hurt anyone with my criticisms.
But, my god. To blatantly attack people over fan content is not only childish, immature but just incredibly disrespectful to the love and passion said person and their team put into the content.
This can honestly range depending on the piece, from heavy shitting on for bad writing, for 'stealing ideas' (which in some cases is USING THE SAME WEAPON AS ANOTHER PROJECT, and yes, it does get that petty) or for just not being up to par with some of the bigger creators' content in the community.
At the end of the day, this is STILL someone's passion project, they're making for FREE for the community. Regardless of its quality, the effort put into it should be respected.
Its funny, because you look at some of the people who seem to preach the problems with the Undertale community, but in truth, they're the problem themselves. Being so stuck up on being hypercritical and only seeing the negatives in it all.
I will admit, as I've already said, I HAVE been the same in the past. To those whose projects I may have been too harsh on in the past, let me reiterate that I genuinely do apologise for harsh comments I've made. I have no right to be a dick to anyone making fan content, as if you're as passionate about yours as I am mine, you deserve respect and support just as I've been given on my projects.
Granted, there are a rare few times I probably WON'T apologise for, but these are for very few and far in between people who genuinely treat people like shit over their projects. And with me, you reap what you sow.
It's a miracle that this community is still standing, let alone still making fan content 6 years after release. A lot of people have shifted ship to Deltarune now, so instead of just constantly living in this fucking orb of hate and ick, can we just...respect each other? Is that too hard?
The general take-away from this is just, well...it's fan content. Not every piece of fan content is gonna be for you, just like how not every piece of fictional media is gonna be for everyone. If you don't like it, just....don't follow or play it. Seems simple enough, right? Just make the stuff you want to, follow stuff you like, but don't make out that people making shit for fun is bad. This ain't a full time job, this ain't industry, its a hobby at best. Criticise all you want constructively, but don't attack people over their artistic expression
