FINAL WORDS, a horror anthology by Adam Barber

The story, The Face Flayer.

Come one, come all, make yourself comfy, take a seat

Maybe grab a drink or something to eat

For I'm about to share with you a most heinous tale

It has love, deceit, and beings from beyond the mortal veil

Afterall, why would you settle for something dull

When instead you can go for something that sends shivers down your spine and back up your skull?

I must warn you, once the story is heard

You'll see why it's called the character's Final Words.

The Face Flayer

A long time ago there once was a family that lived in the woods, a mother, two boys and a father who's practice was selling goods. The father loved his family, nothing else mattered. But unfortunately, his world soon became shattered. For his family became ill with life slowly decaying. Out of fear of losing his loved ones, the father left in search of a cure without a second of delaying. He met many other traders, as he ventured for days, none of which could help, for there trades consisted of food, trinkets and some corn maize. A week went by, still focused on his mission, then something got caught in his line of vision. T'was a figure in the distance, a woman or perhaps a man, the father prayed that whomever they were, medical trade, they ran. As he approached the figure, he noticed something strange, they've dawned a cloak of patchwork and produced odd sounds and mumbles, as if they're deranged. And the cloak, something truly off, it seemed bulky, perhaps made of leather? All he knew was that it was no ordinary cloth. As the father was about to greet the stranger with a friendly face, he then realized it was no member of the human race, but rather a demon, born from sin. The father stood there with fear, he was frozen. Once the father snapped out of it and he turned and ran quickly, but as he did, the demon yelled,"Wait! I can help you and your family!". The father paused and looked back at the horrid thing, and without hesitation, he walked back, not thinking of it's unholy sting. The father asked "Could you really cure the ones that are most dear to me?". The demon replied with a yes but only for a "minor" fee. The demon gestured to his cloak and said "Take a closer look." with a most heinous of grins, the father then looked and realized it was entirely composed of human skin. "Each piece represents a deal I made." the demon explained, "But as you can see, one hole still remains.". "Give me a piece of you of my choice and your family will stay alive.", he even promised eternal life so after their transaction, the father would survive. Desperate, the father accepted, not knowing what piece the demon planned to be collected. Then, without a moment to spare, the demon ripped the father's face off with hellish glee, then stood there and watched him scream with agony. Then the demon fled into the night, leaving the father in excruciating pain and a blood drenched sight, for his vision was distorted with bloody tears, if the father was seen by another, they would describe him as the stuff of fears. Once the father grew numb to the pain, he eagerly went home to claim his prize, something to bring joyful tears to his eyes. The father arrived at his cottage and opened the door, there they all were, alive and not dead on the floor. But the father's moment of relief didn't last long, all of a sudden, they screamed, they didn't recognize him at all. Looking at him the wife and two boys didn't see their loving husband and dad, but instead, they saw a bloody tissue-faced man. The father then fled in a rush now that his meaning to live has been crushed. He lost his home, family and reason to exist, so without hesitation, his own life he would happily extinguish. But each attempt, being more lethal than the last, had failed to kill him no matter what or what way he did cast. The father then remembered the demon's words and the addition of eternal life, "Damn you!" he cursed. The father then decided to wander the woods, seeing that he was unable to die. But maybe he could find the demon, the father thought, and make him pay for his crime. Years have passed, yet the father still remained, his body and mind overtime became drained. The tissue on his face had shriveled off, leaving a skull and two gray eyes behind, his body emaciated and sanity lost, never could the father find. As more years passed, the father became less of a man and more of a beast of the insane kind, he then decided to take back what he once had from other members of mankind. To this day, the father, better known by his victims as the Face Flayer, steals the faces of those who travel near the woods, close by. Hoping that once he had a face, he could see his family again, even though years ago, time had taken a toll on them, and they died.
