First major post time~!
Devlog #1 and what to expect from this <3


First things first - this is possibly the first and last devlog this game is getting, as I plan to keep it relatively small in size. In the best case, you're getting this before autumn - in the worst one, maybe half a year after the summer. Or more, but this is getting finished one way or another.

But now, for a proper introduction.

Introducing __b's "UNDERSWAP: SCARLET FLARE" retake! This is a personal project that I aim to complete with the help of a small team, in order to create a (playable) version of Scarlet Flare that is more than the previous versions with only several Sans fights.

Obviously, this is still in its very early stages and it will take a bit before this enters a real production phase, but so far the general plan and story are complete, alongside designs and a couple other things.

There will be no gameplay shown until this is completely done in order to keep it as a surprise. maybe <3


So, what's the deal with this being unique?

Story wise, this take stems from Undertale Icebound's basic plot - with Monsterkind attempting to create artificial human SOULs to escape from the Underground early, made from ice, natural elements and fire - however, the ice one fails to sustain itself, the nature one goes rampant in search of sources to sustain itself, and the fire one resists, but its power is minimal.

Over time, it begins to develop a voice and a will of its own, and across several years attempts to convince a guilt-ridden Undyne to listen to their plan of giving the monsters salvation, as they've been trapped in the Underground for long enough by the effects of the nature SOUL - and eventually, she breaks and accepts to do so, convinced that she is finally doing something good. Of course, this plan isn't really all that nice, involving setting the Underground on fire under the guise of a prophecy.

But coincidentally, Chara falls down soon before Undyne takes action - and now, alongside monsters they meet and bond with, they are placed in a rush to stop Undyne from whatever she's doing.

...if only it would be that easy.

(as such, there is no thing as a 3-phase Sans fight - and there is a little more than just Undyne either way :p)


Main character cast:

Chara and Sans - The main playable characters. Sans is present here on the human's side as part of a self imposed objective to find out what is going on with Undyne.

Temmie - Taking Flowey's role, they would usually stalk Chara and try to take them down, but given the other events that are going down they choose to watch them unfold.

Undyne - A pseudo-antagonist of sorts. She is convinced that her actions are right after a long time of communicating with the experimental fire SOUL, and only manages to snap out of it when it's all too late.

The Flare - The one controlling Undyne and directing her actions. Despite being inside a container, it can still reach far beyond its limitations.

Only time will tell how it may transform.

Story progression wise, other characters are also involved - notably Alphys, Napstaton and Toriel - however they are not signifiant for the playable portion of the game.

(some of the characters also have battle sprites but i couldn't get something done for all of them sorryyy)

Gameplay and mechanic wise, the main difference is that each of the playable characters will act on separate turns, unlike Deltarune's system where each character gets an action every player's turn - and that, as a side effect for taking damage, both Chara and Sans may be affected with "Fear", a system meant to weaken their battle performance.

i would've included some ui sprites but they're still wip sob sob


Aside from this, everything is still at extremely early stages, but I promise we'll eventually get somewhere! After all, this is more or less meant to prove at least to myself that I can make an original spin on an AU with good but untapped potential.
