So I saw the movie yesterday and as of writing this I am going to see it again later tonight with my brother and his girlfriend so I'll revise this review then (This was written Dec. 6th).
The movie, as a movie. Was pretty mid. As a Five Nights at Freddy's fan it was good. In the eyes of someone with whimsy, it was amazing. If I were to describe it, again without spoilers. It was everything the first movie was 2x, more action, more drama, more corny, more "scary" elements, and more bad writing.
The movie had a good understandable story although I can see why some people who don't know the games can't seem to understand it. It didn't seem to ride on the lore of the games too much just like the first movie, however it is odd seeing that be a huge problem for some fans.
The writing for most of the movie was great although in some parts, especially the end, it felt weird, rushed, and kind of corny. However I do believe Scott had a deadline for writing the movie which makes sense when you see the end. In this movie you can ABSOLUTELY tell it was written by Scott and only Scott.
This movie felt like it played it a lot less safe and "by the book" as the first movie did. It played out more like one of the books from the original trilogy instead of a play it safe kind of generic horror movie about killer animatronics possessed by children. This movie definitely felt rushed. The beginning plays it very slow, is very thought out, and is overall amazing and one of the best parts of the movie. However as the movie goes on you can see Scott realized he can't play the entire movie like that and had to have had finished the script by a certain date and they have to finish the entire movie by mid November of 2025. When watching the movie I thought certain parts were around halfway through the movie, until going back and seeing they were in the last quarter of the movie.
This movie had way more action than the first and it goes by very fast. Around the last quarter of the movie a lot of action and overall just awesome to see stuff happens. They were not being fragile with those puppets lol.
There is much more drama in this movie especially when it comes to Vanessa who is a complete mess this time around. And I do think it is a very cool focal point for her character.
And when I say the movie is corny IT DOES NOT MEAN CRINGEY. I mean corny as in some things are like dad jokes, and are so cheesy they're funny. not that they are so bad they make you feel uncomfortable. And when the movie is corny it does acknowledge it. There's even a part where Abby literally tells Mike something he said was "Really cheesy". And the definitely did a great job of blending scenes together from very thrilling, to sad, to funny. In my opinion the corny parts were just really fun to watch although it seemed to ruin the movie for many people sadly.
This movie also had way more "horror" than the first movie. And I think the entire movie had an absolute perfect balance of Sci-Fi and the Paranormal. Although of course I personally wasn't very scared by anything in the movie because it is aimed at 10 year olds, hell I was 11 when the first movie came out. Plus I'm not the person to really be quivering in my boots at a movie. This movie does rely on jumpscares a bit much and I think that's fine as that is literally all of what the FNAF games are built around. FNAF as a franchise does not rely on distorted images of a 6 year old kids and creepy noises to get you scared, it relies on jumpscares. AND I'M NOT FUCKING STUPID FOR THINKING THAT YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.
And as for the writing, I'm sorry it's just not good. I love Scott, he is a great writer. And if you disagree tell me else who the hell else could've come up with possessed killer Chuck-E-Cheese animatronics. But he absolutely needs Co-writers. I never see movies as explicitly bad movies, I just don't like to be negative when it comes to media like that so I am biased on this movie. When I watch movies I just play along with the plot for the sake of enjoying the movie more. But I can see why some people think some plot points are dumb. Scott clearly did not know how to end this movie quickly, he didn't have enough time to write, nor enough time to film it.
I of course want to write so much more to this already incredibly long supposedly "short review" but that's all I can say without spoilers
This movie was kind of mid and I can't say why without spoilers. As a FNAF fan, it was good for again reasons I can't say without spoilers. As someone who just wants to have a good time watching a movie it was amazing, once again for the last time, things I can't say without spoilers.
But as always, go watch the movie and form your own opinion!
