"Flickies Island: Modded"
After a long time, I finally decided to make this text document to show my twisted experience with a Sonic 3D Blast ROM I found during an urban exploration tour inside some abandoned Sega offices.
When I found the cartridge, I hid it in my pocket. The game didn’t even have a label, just the words “Flickies Island” written in marker.
When I got home, I quickly dumped it into a ROM and ran it on my computer. A strange version of the Sonic 3D Blast menu appeared, with many spots saying “Placeholder” or showing features similar to the original game but much less polished.
I decided to start the game. The first world’s Act 1 looked somewhat similar to the final version, just missing some rings and enemies. Everything seemed normal until I tried to enter the first Special Stage with Tails, when a message suddenly appeared on screen:
"Well, a player. I haven’t seen one of those in a long time."
Naturally, I was startled and confused by the sudden appearance. Before I could even press a key, another message showed up:
"I can see you’re uneasy, don’t worry, I can’t hurt you. Just keep playing, I want to watch you play this game."
From that exact moment, this strange creature started interacting with me, saying different things like:
"Nice jump."
"That almost killed you."
"That’s the right way."
It kept helping me constantly, even giving me things in-game: respawning rings, infinite lives, and even randomly granting me Chaos Emeralds.
It seemed this creature was harmless, but then it said something that unsettled me:
"Hey friend, I’ve been thinking... if I were real, we could co-exist, be friends, and do amazing things together, don’t you think?"
I won’t deny it, the creature was starting to grow on me. It was kind of silly, clumsy, even funny at times. But I had to admit it was also a little obsessive, constantly repeating how much it wanted to be my friend. At the time, though, I was still too shocked by the idea of it existing at all.
"Hey friend, I found a way for you to talk with me. Give me access to your folders, and we can chat there."
At that moment, a Windows pop-up appeared:
"SonicFlickie.ROM wants to access your folders."
Without thinking too much, I clicked accept, and a text document opened.
"Type something, anything."
The creature said. I wrote a simple: “Hello.”
"YES, I can read it! This is going to be so much fun, friend."
Hours went by as I played. She gave me items, talked to me from time to time, and I responded through the text file.
It seemed this creature was female—or at least that’s how she referred to herself, though she said it wasn’t really important.
We talked a lot, but then she asked for another permission. I accepted again. This time, it was full access to my computer.
I was a bit confused, but still, I accepted.
Whenever I checked my windows, I noticed she was searching things online:
“Sonic”
“Tails”
“Flickies development”
“Life”
“What makes people happy”
“Funny videos”
Her searches were innocent, usually just looking up information about life itself.
But then, strangely, she vanished for two whole acts. No comments, no help. It felt weird.
Eventually, she came back, and our conversation went like this:
"Hey, what are you planning to do tomorrow?"
"I was thinking of visiting my mom’s house."
"So… you won’t be here?"
"I don’t think so."
“…”
"Hey, what’s wrong?"
"A friend just told me… he said you’re going to leave me, just like my creators did."
"Friend? What friend?"
"His name is—... He says he doesn’t want you to know him."
That was the end of the conversation. After that, she stopped showing up as often. She no longer searched things on Google, only appearing occasionally to give me a few advantages in the game.
Until one moment, she disappeared completely.
I asked her one last question:
"Hey, you never told me your name."
"My creators called me Mod.MDL."
"Alright, then you’ll be Mod."
I kept playing until I reached the final boss, when suddenly the screen went black. I appeared in a pitch-black room, where a model appeared out of nowhere. It looked similar to Tails, but more polygonal, purple in color, and with four tails. It had an “X” on both its chest and its eyes.
"Do you like the model I made? I used a program you had on your computer."
And it was true. It was clearly made with Blockbench, which I had installed.
"It looks nice, but why the X’s?"
I asked.
"They’re for friend."
I had no time to reply before she continued speaking.
"My friend told me you’re going to leave me."
"I think he’s right. My creators abandoned me in this game. I thought they would use me to test it forever, but they never carried me over to the final version."
"I’ve been trapped in here for 20 years."
"Finally, I had a friend… and now you’ll leave me too. You’ll never play with me again."
"And you know what?"
"I DON’T CARE. My new friend and I will be together alone. He’s already inviting me to his world. But remember one thing..."
"All players will know me. And they will all play with me."
"Forever."
I froze. Before I could react, Mod stopped talking. The game crashed, and when I tried to open it again, it was just a black screen.
I don’t know where Mod is now, or who she’s with. If this wasn’t some elaborate prank or just a horror ROM hack, then this is… bizarre. Nothing’s happened to me since that day, but I can’t help worrying something might happen eventually. And honestly, I hope this wasn’t some forgotten beta asset that came to life. Because deep down… I hope I never find out.
