Happy Halloween!
Sorry, I just really dig halloween, so i made a special build of the demo with all this spooky stuff in it.
One big influence on Desert Child is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Not for it’s exploration or metroidvania elements, but it’s detailed animations and sparing use of 3D in a 2D game.

I like the 32-bit era of videogames for being this weird transitional period between 2D and 3D. Games like Symphony and Legend of Oasis are still burned into my mind, partly because they seemed so similar to 16-bit games, but would occasionally surprise you and do something that could never be achieved on a Super Nintendo.

Symphony has this amazing upbeat gothic-horror style that I just love. The skeletons, zombies, bats and other monsters are such harmless cartoon characters, but come together and form this moody teen-horror vibe. It’s something I’ve wanted to do in a game for ages, but just never have the right idea for.
SO I’ve decided to spend WAY too long redrawing a bunch of things in the Desert Child Demo, just to placate my childhood obsession with gaudy Halloween games, haha.
So I hope you enjoy the Desert Child Halloween Spooktacular!
And check out the game’s Kickstarter if you like it! http://kck.st/2ggPini
