SPOILERS for M3GAN!!!
I just got done watching M3GAN, a sci-fi movie featuring a robot, which I was excited to watch.
However, from the very beginning there were a lot of cliche moments that took place that made me somehow feel annoyed. XD It's hard to describe. I just finished watching the movie, and I already seem to be forgetting some moments I thought were actually good. O-O Did M3GAN wipe out my memory or something...? JK
The plot isn't anything you've never seen before. You might recall Child's Play's Chucky or Terminator's Skynet.
You have a toy company in the movie, which similarly to the Play Pal Toys Company (Child's Play), want to develop the next best toy for children. Of course, for immense profit.
"And what are children but corporate trainees?" - Mr. Sullivan (Child's Play 3)
By the way, one of their toys was way too expensive and there was a moment discussing simplifying the toy in order to make it more affordable. If I am recalling correctly, they wanted it priced around $50.00 or so.
When M3GAN, the notorious doll/robot in this movie, is developed it was mentioned she was priced around $10,000. Doesn't really solve the affordability issue there, unless they're betting on parents simply throwing money at the latest and greatest invention, said to rival automobiles lol. You can imagine how that turned out...yeah. -_-
Before I discuss a few of my grievances with this movie, I'll start out with some positives. :)
I found the (what I dub) "You'll never forget moment" really touching between M3GAN and the girl. Helping her overcome her traumatic experience and fear of losing positive memories of her parents.
Some features of M3GAN, I found to be interesting and genuinely creepy. Like making sound effects when chasing a victim. That surprised me. I also liked the way she runs on all fours like she's a wild animal. When her systems begin to glitch out, she has very spider-like and otherworldly movements. It made me think of the ending of Child's Play 1, which pretty much terrified me as a child haha. The moment where Chucky is all burned to a crisp and slowly stalks his prey down the hallway. This moment creates a pretty haunting image.
The ending battle was pretty cool I must say. The part where the girl took control of the larger robot with her 'power gloves.' lol
Now that I got my positives out of the way, onto some negatives.
-The accident established at the beginning of the movie was so out of nowhere and made me roll my eyes. XD Obvious need to move the plot along. Ok.
-The social worker was unnecessarily intrusive and overly critical of every little thing. Why is it a problem if a child is told not to touch something because it is a collectible? Not a big deal. I was under the impression such observations were made from a distance without interference as to not interrupt natural daily activities. Otherwise, such close scrutiny would create an uncomfortable environment and interactions would feel likely to be a performance or forced.
-The irresponsible dog owner. Dude, when the police get involved, the lousy cop ignores obvious evidence of a dog attack. Siding with the neglectful dog owner. I don't know if laws differentiate in other states, but that's enough trouble to get a dog put down right away. Sad, but true. Ultimately, the owner's fault. What was never explained was why the fence was broken...or if it was I missed it somehow.
-Characters being so surprised that programming a robot to be fully autonomous and free thinking would come back to bite them in the butt later. *GASP* Boy, I didn't see that coming, did you?
-The pen trick being used twice. *BIG SIGH*
-The girl slapping the aunt. O_O How did she slap with such power, especially being smaller?
-How the hell did the employees survive the explosion???
-Of course, the ending needed to happen because these movies all follow the same formula.
What do I rate this movie? It's gotta be a 6/10 for me. :/ Movies centered around robots have become frustrating for me lol. I wanted to love this movie, but my dead heart doesn't. XD
