When I hopped into this game, I wasn’t really expecting anything good, due to chapter 1. However, alot has changed since that first, short lived playthrough, so here’s what I have to say about the game.
(Spoilers ahead, duh)
The Map
Starting off, the map, whilst it was hard to navigate at some points, was actually quite good! It was well decorated and it’s quite cool how there’s 1 theme park ride dedicated to each chapter 1 character. However, I do have to say, it doesn’t make too much sense this chapter takes place at odd world considering it’s heavily implied in chapter 1 that odd world and the rainbow friends companies were rivals, so it wouldn’t make much sense for liscensed Rainbow friends themed attractions to be plastered around in a rival companies’ area, but oh well.
Map score : 8/10
New character designs
I went into this chapter fully blind, so it was quite a surprise to see 2 new characters in this chapter, which are : Yellow and Cyan.
Starting with Yellow.
It doesn’t take multiple glances to see yellow is based off a pterodactyl (I’m going to be honest, at first I thought he was some kind of bird ;-;)
Yellow looks like some kind of low budget animatronic, as instead of any sort of wings there’s a propellor on his back. It does look a little boring, but there’s a few nice creative touches here and there, so it’s a pass.
Now, on to cyan.
Ehh, for cyan it’s pretty hard. Cyan does look pretty cool, but her design lacks that many creative features and overall has the same problem with green, but hey at least she isn’t a bunch of green pool noodles slapped together, am I right?
New character designs score : 5/10
Animation
The animation, when not really seen in it’s full potential, looks quite meh. However, when it is used to it’s full extent, it’s absolutely amazing.
In the first part of the first cutscene, whilst nobody really pays attention to this, the way the old man just springs up and turns to face your character looks so.. Alive! I do have to admit, it looked quite exaggerated, but it just goes to show how much the animation improved from… A bundle of green pool noodles peeking around a brick wall.
Using another example in that same first cutscene, when Red presses the button and releases Blue and Green, whilst Green doesn’t really move too specially, the way Blue crouches underneath the garage door whilst running looks absolutely amazing and very smooth.
Also, Purple’s wiggling arms in the Purple’s lair area are absolutely hilarious to look at lmao
Animation score : 10/10
Gimmicks
Purple
Even though I barely went to Purple’s lair during my gameplay, the mechanic was simple (and done in other games) but it really helped to spike the difficulty a bunch and I was honestly on edge whilst navigating from rock to rock avoiding his dumb dangling arms.
During hour 3 I actually had to time my movements just right, because I was afraid Purple would kill me and I didn’t wanna have to spend robux to revive myself so my run would’ve come to a halt. I literally had to speed past to the exit lol.
Yellow
Now, I never got caught by Yellow, so I watched a YouTube video of someone getting caught by Yellow. I’m pretty sure the mechanic is unique (so points there). Even if simple, it’s still pretty interesting.
To sum it up, if Yellow catches you, instead of dying, you get a second chance (don’t worry, every time Yellow catches you, you will get this second chance). However, to actually earn this second chance, Yellow will carry you into the air and eventually you’ll be above the bouncy castle.
You have to time your jump just right, and if you do this correctly, you will land inside the bouncy castle and be safe. If you miss this jump or Yellow is able to get you to his nest, you will die.
Sadly, I literally have no idea what Cyan’s gimmick is, so I’ll skip her. I might update this in the future if I’m able to figure it out though!
Gimmicks score : 9/10
Difficulty
Whilst hard at various points, and getting some BS deaths to green (smh he’s probably mad I called him a bundle of green pool noodles) this chapter was easy, but definitely harder by about a mile then chapter 1. This is helped by Purple’s lair, Green’s AI sometimes blocking pathways to important areas, and sometimes 2-3 characters chasing you at once.
Unfortunately for this chapter, the locations of the items are quite close together, making them very easy to find. And what do you know! The devs were just nice enough to highlight the locations of the items if you’re taking too long like chapter 1!
Difficulty score : 5/10
Dialogue
This isn’t too important, but I feel like I should add this to the review. The dialogue, whilst bland at times, actually got me at one point!
After hour 1 ended, when the old man said “wait, there was actually an SOS light? I mean, you guys must be good at finding things!” I have no idea why, but I found it pretty funny.
Other then that, the dialogue doesn’t really shine through.
Dialogue score : 6/10
End-Game sequence
I’ve only seen the chapter 1 endgame sequence on Youtube, but after playing the chapter 2 endgame sequence, trust me when I say this, this one is 10x better.
I’ll explain what happens here : When you go into Orange’s Cavern Coaster, all of the players have to sit down in a bunch of minecarts (the number depends on how many players are still alive).
You are introduced to this pretty unique and fun leaning mechanic. Basically, at certain points throughout the roaller coaster, there are two pathways. You have to lean to the side the pathway is on in order to ride down that pathway. If you don’t do this, you go down the other pathway.
Then, you have to start following a cart of Lookies (these weird creatures that are copies of Red’s head but different colours) as they go down the coaster. If you fail to follow them, you die.
After avoiding a bunch of the monsters, you drop down into a small room. Once you’re about to exit, Cyan drops down through one of the pipes and she chases you through a bunch of hallways. After reaching the end of these hallways, chapter 2 ends.
Whilst the chase scene was kinda boring and easy, the leaning mechanic was honestly very fun and easy to get used to. I was also scared I’d mess up at the last moment, so it was pretty stressful too.
End-Game sequence score : 8/10
Bugs and glitches
The only “glitch” I could find was that in the lobby, there was a small opening to the side of the metal fence. If you got through this gap, you could enter an out of bounds section. I even posted a screenshot of me getting out of bounds using this oversight.
Unfortunately, a few hours after my post, the devs seem to have placed an invisible barrier inbetween the fence and the wall, so now it’s pretty much bug-free
Bugs and glitches score : 10/10
Overall score : 6/10
I’m gonna be real here, whilst I don’t like rainbow friends too much, this chapter was honestly a major improvement over chapter 1, which I did NOT expect. However, it was still quite generic and bland at points, so it lost a bit of ranking.
