There's a lot of theories as to why this decision was made. It's no secret that Cavill himself is a video game nerd and respects his fans and the source material - especially for The Witcher.
Now, there is drama about him and what he was like on the set. In what I could see, Cavill is like Keanu Reeves in some ways. He seems very humble, kind, respectful, and passionate about his work.
I seriously feel so bad for him and he handles this terrible news with absolute class.
I am happy for him that he will be working on Warhammer 40K, which he himself is a fan of and he even paints little models of.
If you watch the AngryJoeShow's video about the news, he pretty much summed up how I feel.

Henry Cavill OFFICIALLY OUT! AGAIN! James Gunn REBOOTING SUPERMAN! - ANGRY RANT! - YouTube
When are we going to be done with the endless reboots and origin stories? These characters need to finally be allowed to evolve and wow us with amazing stories. Like Angry Joe said, DC must not want our money because Henry portrays the character so well and really feels like a real-life Superman.
I really am shocked that James Gunn wouldn't take Superman to space, seeing as how he managed to turn obscure characters like The Guardians of The Galaxy popular.
We already have Smallville with the great Tom Welling as a young Clark Kent. It's time to move on!
This just sucks man.
