Development for Grimstorm: Colosseum is progressing nicely - I’ve finished adding the armour types, plus have balanced and fixed a few minor issues regarding movement. Now that I’ve essentially finished the core engine for the game, it’s now time to start presenting it like it’s supposed to.
A while back in 2015 I did some spriting of some armour designs, and one basic style stood out to me. I took it and tweaked it a little, and made three basic armour sets that could be used in Grimstorm: Colosseum.
Normal armour is a good balanced type - it allows you to perform special moves and blocking attacks, whilst giving you a fair amount protection.
Light armour is for the evasive fighter. You’ll have less stamina and defence, but evasive moves cost significantly less to perform. That means you’ll be able to dance around your opponents whilst striking when the moment is right.
Heavy armour is for the fierce fighter. You’ll gain a large defence and stamina boost to keep you going in battle for longer, but performing evasive moves will drain even more stamina than usual. You’ll favour blocking and shield striking your opponent, but you can take a beating.
The game will have arena battles with up to 4 players, so I’m in need of 4 different colour schemes. The design above shows two different variants of colours - one more desaturated and one more vibrant. Which ones do you prefer? And do you think that any changes should be made to the armour designs? I kept bodies and lower halves the same/similar because it would save a lot of time on animation.
Beta testers: It may be a while now until the next update since I’m working on sprites and animations, so now’s a good time to take a break!
