The 7 Day Roguelike Challenge is basically a 7 day long jam where developers are meant to make a roguelike game or a game inspired by the roguelike theme. Unfortunately majority of these games failed and were not completed in time, however quite a few awesome games were made. I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are a few of my favorites, in a random order.
Booty Seekers has you playing the captain of a ship of pirates. You are able to move your ship around the ocean to defeat other ships of pirates in order to gain more loot and supplies. Each ship moves in turn, sometimes exploding due to other ships attacking them. Each time you move, a day goes by. Throughout the days random events can pop up to add a bit of excitement by requiring you to make decisions as captain. These events can vary from the crew getting sick of being at sea, other pirates making their way onto your ship or birds pooping on you. The life of a pirate may not be glamorous, but it is filled with tons of adventure. Be careful not to let your ship break or run out of supplies, or your crew will leave you in the sea.
Cloak And Tower is a colorful and charming game that has you put into a tower of monsters. This randomly generated tower is full of rooms that can either contain treasure or monsters. With your trusty bow and sword, you must battle your way through these rooms going higher and higher in the tower. You are also armed with some bombs that can be lit and thrown. Monsters include skeletons that pack a punch, slimes that charge at you, and bats that fly around avoiding rocks and walls. You must defeat all monsters in a single room to unlock the doors and move on. A handy mini-map displays what rooms you have defeated, what rooms contain only treasure, and even boss rooms. This game is quite the challenge, but very fun to play.
Copy Frogue is a simple Frogger inspired game but filled with typical Rogue-like ASCII character graphics, with a modern smooth look and color-scheme. Like Frogger, you control a frog who must hop across the road and sometimes logs. There are also trains to watch out for and lily pads to jump on to, but this game keeps you moving forward. Every so often you will come across a gift gate. These are not options and, despite the name, not always gifts. Some ‘gifts’ include going blind or reversing your controls. There is also a letter K that comes and kills you if you do not proceed fast enough. See how far you can get!
DOWN, DOWN, DOWN is a pretty interesting game where your primary focus is to continue deeper and deeper into a hole.Orks, archers, and slime can all appear along these holes, but you must dodge them in order to focus on the main task at hand. Each level is randomly generated, spawning in at different sizes with holes in different places. It is pretty easy to die, since you cannot fight back or gain any health. The game itself is very fast paced and addictive even though the graphics appear to be simple shapes. Good luck going down, down, down…
DuckSoup Dungeon is an addicting GameBoy inspired game that has you exploring an infinite dungeon. You can choose a character at the start of the game, though 3 out of the 4 need to be unlocked by collecting coins within the game. Each character has its own set of abilities. The first character you are able to play is a chicken that can attack by swiping in a direction. This swipe can go through walls and packs a punch to any enemies. The pig can roll across the ground and attack by rolling hard against an enemy.Inside the dungeon you will find enemies like slime that split into more slimes, skeletons, bats, and wizards that spawn more skeletons. There are also pots that can be broken to reveal a splash of light and some coins. The dungeon is not very bright, but there is a bit of glow around you that can help. You are also able to climb up walls by jumping against them. Level up by killing enemies, search for coins, and unlock all the characters in this charming game.
Famine Rogue Like is a rogue-like farm game where a famine has broke out and you must plant food for your family to survive. You must move around the farm and plant crops, then defend the crops as they grow. When the plants are fully grown, you are able to harvest them for more food. You are not the only one in need of food, british soldiers come onto your land looking to take what you have! You must attack and kill them to keep your plants alive. If they hit you, you will lose a large number of your crops and if you run out of food, you will starve to death and die. Be mindful of your movements since each time you move a square, it will cost you a piece of food. My favorite part of this game is an old farmer who appears on each Day screen. This old man warns you of the british or of crops, but also talks about his goat being stolen by those ‘damn redcoats’ and asks what a roguelike is. It is quite entertaining.
Here Be Dragons 2 is a beautiful game where you adventure across lands looking for loot whilebuilding a map. Along the way, other characters are found that may want to join the group. Each character has a different ability; pirates know where the sea is, angles heal you a bit, ninjas make it so that enemies cannot see you from far away. If you collect enough loot, the characters may follow you into the next land. You can only keep one hero in your party, when crossing into a new land. As you explore the land, you can find treasure as well as buildings and telescopes. Telescopes will reveal more of the land where as buildings will either teleport you to new areas or fire a cannon. Each land has a different biome and different enemies to defeat. These enemies can diminish your health. Walking around and exploring also takes up some of your health so you may have to go to the next part of the map faster than you would like. This game is really addictive and very fun to play, paired with its charming graphics, you will be exploring for ages.
Outlaw Space is a beautiful, but some what buggy game that has you trying to fix your crashed ship. Your ship has crashed on another planet and the parts to fix it are scattered around that world. You and your team of three must hunt for each of the missing part in order to complete your ship. Along the way, you must destroy enemy bug-like robots that seem to jump out of everywhere. Destroying these robots will gain your team experience and money. This game is visually beautiful, mixing pixel art with a more realistic look. Unfortunately sometimes it bugs out quite a bit. If you are collecting parts and one of the parts does not disappear upon pick up, you can just continue to pick it up until you have all parts. This, however, will not complete your ship. Hopefully, this bug will be squashed in a future update.
The Promised Land you play as a slave named Samuel, who has ran away from the Magnolia Plantation in the time of slavery. There is a reward out there for runaways, so many farmers are looking for you. If you get too close to a house or other people, they might recognize you and try to capture you. With only your fists to fight with, it is much better to run and hide. Luckily for you, there is a home close by that you can spend your first night in. The only downside is that each day, the reward for you becomes greater and greater. You must run, escape, flee, and make your way to the promised land.
There are many other awesome games that you can check out here!
