The A Game By It’s Cover was a game jam that challenged game developers to make a game inspired by famicase cover art. There were quite a few games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in no specific order.

Cat Cafe is an adorable, retro game that has you serving cats at a cafe! These cats will order various drinks or desserts which you can then pick up from the serving window. Sometimes you have to pick up several different desserts in a row to get the correct one for the cat who is ordering it. Many cats will be hanging out in the cafe, though only some will order something to eat. You must bring the item over to that cat before it gets angry. If you wait too long, that cat will run off and you will lose a life. The cats who are running around the cafe feel that you are there to play! So while you have an order in your hand, those cats will jump at you and sometimes knock things out of your hand. This will cause you to lose a life as well. You must act quickly, getting the correct order again and delivering it on time if you drop an order. Fill as many orders as you can before this cafe becomes chaos!

Bittersweet is creepy puzzler that has you living in a strange home trying to find a way out. You are a black ghost person who has found yourself in the home of some brainwashed humans. All of the doors are nailed shut, so there is no way to escape. The other humans in this house think that this is normal - that the locked doors keep the happiness in. The monster that seems to have trapped all of you guys in this home waits above, watching you like dolls in a doll house. You decide to look for a way to escape this strange place. Each puzzle is a bit harder - requiring you to find different tools to break through doors or boarded up areas. As you take your time looking for these items, the monster from above will come down towards you. If you do something that the monster doesn’t like, it will eat you and stop what you are doing. If you solve a puzzle, he will back off for a little while, but don’t expect him to just watch you forever.

Dungeon of Flowers is an interesting game that has you trapped in a strange dungeon full of flowers. A skeleton seems to know what is going on - but he isn’t really into telling you what you are doing there. Instead, he calls you “mom” and directs you to collect pieces of flower gems. These little gems are on your minimap, just as the skeleton tells you, but so are ghosts that you must defeat. This game goes from a 3D maze to a top down shooter to allow you to try and defeat the ghosts. You can only shoot once per move, but you can move before that shot to avoid being hurt. The ghosts will have a turn after you, so make sure you are prepared to take them on. What really makes this game awesome is the little interactions between the skeletons and you. As a human, they do not care too much for what you are saying and instead will continue on telling you what to do and how to help them. You seem to be their only hope, whether they know it or not, so you must continue on your strange quest in this charming world.

Rainbow Sword is a cute but challenging game about a little rainbow cloud fighting back for the sun! Rain clouds have come and beat up the sun, making the sky full of darkness and rain. You are a rainbow cloud with a rainbow sword, looking to avenge the sun and get rid of all of these dark storm clouds. These clouds are able to shoot rain drops at you and run into you, causing you to become full of water and darker. If you get hit too many times, you will turn into one of those nasty storm clouds and have to restart the area. You do have a sword made of the brightest rainbow you can use to reflect bullets or hit clouds. As you go around this strange fortress in the clouds, you will find boss clouds with cool hats. These bosses need to be killed to get keys to unlock new areas. Getting revenge for the sun is going to be quite the challenge, so be prepared to hold your rainbow sword by your side as you find your way around.

Velo Kitty short but sweet game about a cat who is collecting fish for a local sushi place! You are a little cat on your bike who is looking to collect the fish scattered around the area. You can carry up to three fish in your bike basket, before bringing them back to the sushi restaurant. Dotted around the area, there are some other cats that are looking for some easy fish to grab. These cats will take the fish that you have and if you have no fish to take, they will beat you up ending the game. You need to collect 10 fish for the sushi restaurant as fast as you can, so make sure every fish counts!

Satellite Love is a 3D tower defense game that has you placing towers in side a giant cube. This giant cube is in between the enemy’s spawn and where they want to go. You are able to place turrets in the form of orbs on dark orbs around this square. If you place the turrets on all corners of a square, it will form a wall that the enemy’s cannot go through. This can in turn create a path that the enemies decide to go through. If you use this to your advantage, you can make long paths that enemies go through full of your turrets so you destroy them. You are in space, so you are able to use your jetpack to move around inside this box. When you build up your wall of turrets and paths in the cube, you will really start destroying all of the enemies you have. Make sure you place everything thoughtfully!

The House on the Left is a charming, spooky platformer that has you checking out a haunted house. Once you go in the first door, you find that it isn’t that easy getting back out! You must run around the strange home finding keys and unlocking doors to the next level. Ghosts, skeletons, and monsters lurk inside this house. If you go near them, you will start to become scared. As your fear bar fills up, it will start becoming dark and you will start hearing louder voices. If you become too spooked, you will die and be trapped inside the house forever. The levels get harder and harder as you continue through the house, with more monsters lurking in the dark. Can you survive them all?

NIJI is a colorful match-3 type game that has you collecting flowers on the top of a rainbow! You are a simple flower, riding on a rainbow, looking to bring the other flowers together. You can collect flowers in a row by running into them, linking them in front of you. You can grab many flowers to make a long train of flowers, but in order to gain points you must move the flowers around in the chain to link up three. Once those three same flowers are linked, they will disappear and you will gain points. This game is quite simple in thought, but the new take on match-3 is very addictive and will likely have you challenging your highscore.

One Brave Chicken is a challenging shooter that has you trying to save your friend! A necromancer has turned you into a lone chicken and kidnapped all of your friends. You must now go into this spooky house to save all of your friends. You have a gun with you, so you can destroy all of the zombies, bats, ghosts, and eventually the necromancer while saving your friends! You will need to find keys to unlock the doors to new areas. You can see all of the monsters on the other side of the doors fighting to get at you. You have to be quick to shoot them all down before they get to you. Sometimes little green gnomes run around the room. You can shoot these creatures for more health but they will take a huge chunk of it if they run into you! Shoot your way through the haunted house and save all of your friends, even if you are a lone chicken.

Dr. Bon Bon Puzzle is a cute match-3 puzzler that has you helping Dr. Bon Bon create melted candy pieces. You need to match up enough of one color to fill in the vials in his lab. Once you have two vials filled, you can combine them to make all of the colored candies on the screen half and half candies! These candies can then match each other, as well as the solid versions of themselves. If you match more than three candies, you can make a star candy that when matched will take out a whole row of candies! This match game is quite fun as well as addictive.

SHE is a story based game that forces you to become a bad friend. You are a normal highschooler going to school, running late. Once you get to your class, you find that your class is focused on introducing the new girl. You have missed her telling everyone her name, so you will call her ‘She’. The teacher wants you two to become friends - for you to look after her, but very soon it seems that the game will not allow you. Even though there are a few choices on what you can say, you are unable to click any of the nice ones. This forces you to insult the girl right off the bat. After that, the answers seem to move quickly, trying to trick you into insulting her. You must continue to battle against the game and become a friend to this new kid, even if it is hard as the game will not let you. Try to become friends and fight for your happy ending.
