The A Game By Its Cover was a jam where developers were given the challenge to make games based on fake game cartrages. These cartridges had titles and graphics that they then based their games off of. There were many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.
UNTERwELT is a beautiful, mysterious game about an engineer. Working for some futuristic company, it’s your first day on the job. You must get your ID card and find your way to the head chef’s office. There, he gives you a mission to go to the basement and fix a broken pipe. Down in the basement, however, there are some secret areas that you discover. It’s up to you to explore them and figure out what secrets this company holds. There are multiple endings to this game, each one quite different. You may also need a QR Code reader to continue the game. What else is going on in this strange facility?
Life on a Mountain is a mysterious game about a person who is hiking on a mountain. At first it is quite peaceful, until you start to find lost letters from another hiker. Blood and scratch marks start to appear, along with more notes, talking about how lonely and how scared the other person was. You must search around for keys and objects that will help you get farther up this snow covered mountain. Figure out what happened to the last person who was here.
Dolphin Island 2 takes you on an adventure inside the game itself. The Devil King has taken the game Dolphin Island and rewritten the code so that all of Aisha’s classmates have gone into the game. Aisha must go into the game herself and save the trapped children. Aisha has only her sword and a shield that regenerates over time. You must dodge bullets, bits of ice, and other monsters that run towards you. Your character only has one life - so make your moves wisely and always leave time for your shield to regenerate!
She Might Think is a beautiful, unique game that shows you different points of view. You can choose a couple of different females, then walk them through the same apartment. This apartment is filled with many objects: soccer balls, mud covered shoes, books, game systems, and much more. Each girl has a different opinion on each object - different likes and dislikes. The goal of this game is to show you that girls are all different and some do not follow the general gender based stereotypes.
Wani Wani Picnic is a charming little platformer about Ally the gator who is on her way to a picnic. Along the way, there are baddies who are trying to harm Ally. You must eat these bad guys to get rid of them! This is quite helpful, as Ally is really very hungry. Eating eggs or baddies will fill up a hunger bar. If this bar gets too low or too high, the game is over - so you need to make sure Ally will still be hungry for the picnic, but does not starve. This game has a very old school feel, especially with the circles of food you must jump through to clear the level. Eat your way to the picnic!
Cicada: Midsummer Roar takes you to Camp Sunshine, the buggiest camp in the area! Camp Sunshine is a camp full of rare bugs. As summer is ending, you decide to catch some of these rare beauties. In each area, you have a goal of a specific number of bugs. You must walk around and catch these bugs. If the bugs see you with your net, they will fly away. If you are able to catch them then more will appear. Some of the bugs move faster than others, so you must be quick. Go catch the rarest of bugs!
