Jam Favorites: Familiar Game Jam 5

Check out some fantastic games made with the theme Deconstruction in mind!

The Familiar Game Jam 5 was a 48 hour jam that happened both at a physical location in Spain and online globally. The theme of this jam was “Deconstruction”. There were many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

To Valhalla is a beautiful, simple game that has you rebuilding a bridge. You were floating in the sky, going from sky island to sky island, when your ship crash landed into a bridge. Without thinking, you crossed the bridge to see what was on the land. After getting on the island the bridge collapsed. You must rebuild it with the only source of stone on the island - a princess’ tower. The only issue is, goblins are also looking for building material. They keep taking blocks from the tower. If the tower gets too low, the princess will not have anything left. You must rebuild the bridge, destroy the goblins, and stop the tower from getting too low! This game is super challenging, but very fun to play.

Player vs Game has you fighting against the game itself! In this platformer, you are looking to get a coin to an arcade machine. This seems like an easy task, until you find that the game is working against you. The game does not want the player win, so it will cause all sorts of glitches - from turning the game upside down to causing lag. The game will come just short of breaking itself so that the player does not win. At the bottom of the screen you can see the cooldowns for each of the challenges the game can present - but you must keep going forward and reach checkpoints to have a chance of winning. Over time the game will start to load up the death screen which, once loaded, will kill you. This game also has a better balanced local multiplayer where one can be the game and the other can be the player. Will you be able to get the coin?

The Prophect of Cocomulo is a super-challenging tower defense game like no other. A giant monster, called Cocomulo, has come to the town. It is looking to destroy houses in the village. The people in this town may not be the strongest, but they have the best carpenters around! In an attempt to save their little community, you must build, re-arrange, and upgrade homes to fight Cocomulo. Each house can be upgraded several times to start firing cannons at the monster. Houses must also be moved to different parts of the village to evade the attacks of Cocomulo, who slowly moves around the town destroying buildings in his path. Both moving buildings and upgrading homes will take time, so make sure you leave some time before the needed construction. Can you defeat Cocomulo and leave at least four homes standing?

Decookstruction is a cooking-based game that has you deconstructing plates of food and sending them out! Each plate of food comes to your table completely full of food. You must take out the desired percentage and put them into boxes. Each box only holds one type of food, so you must put as much as it needs in the box. This game is quite challenging, as the time you are given is quite short. Once you think the plate is perfect, send it out to the customer. If you get it correct, you will gain money. If you get it wrong, you will lose money. Good luck, you’ll need it.

Deconstrukitten is a cute puzzler game where you must hit blocks to make it to the exit. You are a cat with a pickaxe who is looking to move blocks to get to an exit. Some blocks are stuck on a pole and can be rotated, some can be pushed, and others can be destroyed and used to rebuild. You must figure out where blocks must go in order to get to the exit: if there are spikes that must be crossed then blue blocks might need to be pushed into them, if you have to get over to another area then you might have to hit the walls of green blocks to rotate them. This game is quite fun but does provide a bit of a challenge!
