Jam Favorites: gm(48):Death is Useful

Check out some of my gm(48) favorites!

The GM(48) is a Game Maker anual contest held by the users of Reddit, where developers are challenged to make a game using Game Maker in 48 hours. The theme for the 13th gm(48) was “Death is Useful.” Many interesting games have been made with this theme. I have played all of them in my compilation video series, below, in a random order, are some of my favorites:

9Lives puts the player in control of a cat! This cat just wants to get home to his owner, however there are lots of things in the way, as the owner lives on the top floor of a very dangerous apartment building. Each time the cat dies, whether it be by dog, electrical shock, water, or being stuck in the wrong area, he becomes a ghost for 30 seconds and can go through specific white areas on the screen. This makes it so that the player must kill the cat in order to find their way home. The graphics for this game are sort of spooky looking, making the world around the cat seem very threatening. To make matter worst, the cat has very poor eyesight and seems to only see things that are very close to him clearly. Use your lives wisely and make it back home.

The Last Glimpse of Hope is an eery story driven game about someone who is lost in a cold arctic like area. The game states that death is inevitable, yet the player must come out of their body, to float through doors and find codes to proceed. Once the player leaves their body, they can go through doors to find lost messages that were once sent to them by another person. These messages hint to passcodes that the player must then solve to go through the door. Do not forget that it is freezing out, so you must also go to fires so that your body will not freeze to death. After going through many, many passcode protected doors and solving many clues, you may find the inevitable.

Pixel Purgatory puts the player in a limbo after death. This nothingness is where a pixel must face the sins that they have committed during their life. You have committed three sins, all of which now have to be reconciled so that you are able to go to heaven. In order to get to these sins, the player has to kill themselves over and over in this nothingness to spray blood along the floor. This blood will then define the blocks that the player can go onto. Through this mysterious limbo, the player also has a guide in the form of a weird stone-faced thing. This thing plays as a checkpoint as well as information as to what the player needs to do. This game is short, with a meaningful ending, and lots of blood. It also requires some patience, as the player needs to spray blood at points, sending him or herself back to the last checkpoint.

SCP Escape is a game about a man who is reliving the same day over and over. He is in jail, where many guards are watching over the area. Even though this man dies, he is able to keep whatever inventory he has between deaths. Between gathering up different items, and finding the thing that is your power, this game is pretty interesting story wise. You must use your own death to overcome many puzzles to escape. Try to read the bits of story at the top, they really do help with the game!

There are quite a few other games with interesting concepts that can be found here.
