Jam Favorites: gm(48):Descend

Check out some games that have you descending deeper...

The gm(48):Descend was a 48 hour jam where developers needed to make a game using Game Maker. The rules are similar to Ludum Dare - developers must make everything themselves in that time frame, and submit source code. The theme of this jam was “Descend”. There were many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

Mr. Poop - a Sewer Adventure is a challenging platformer that has you going deeper into the sewer! You play a cute poop who is on an epic adventure under the ground to save his wife, Mrs. Poop. Along the way, you are going to have to overcome many obstacles and bad guys to make it to your wife. Giant toilet paper rolls, rat minions, and spikes all stand in your way. There are even buttons that can be triggered by enemies to shoot arrows at you! You will need to time your movements well and not forget to activate checkpoint flags.

Mr. Poop - a Sewer Adventure is a really challenging game, but it is also full of secret areas and interesting places to get too. Many of these secret areas are filled with coins that will give you a better score. You do not have a limit on the amount of lives you have, however, each time you die your score will become lower. Keep yourself alive to continue to get the best score possible and save your wife!

Vertically Challenged is a short but very nice platformer that has some great bones! You cannot jump in Vertically Challenged so you must walk around and use ladders to get up to higher areas. As you walk around, the platforms rotate around the middle cylinder. You can collect keys and these keys will open up ways to the platforms below.

You must get down towards the bottom of the screen and then fall into the next level. There are only three levels in total, but it’s pretty fun to play through and I really hope the developer continues it or does something more with this idea!

Abyss has you exploring the world under the sea, in hopes of finding some treasure! You have gone under water prepared, you have an oxygen tank and a harpoon to help you make to the treasure. Your oxygen will slowly deplete as you move around, so you will need to blast open barrels of oxygen and drink the air bubbles that pop out of them. You will need to do this with your harpoon.

Your harpoon is a really great weapon! You can use it to break barrels and protect yourself from fish and other underwater creatures. You do need to charge up your harpoon to really do damage, but it can be good for shooting fishes away from you, as long as the fish don’t hit the walls of the underwater cave and bounce back. Fish can harm you, so you will need to be careful around it! As you make it deeper into the ocean, you will find more fish, more challenge, and upgrades. These upgrades will help you hold more oxygen or go faster, so you can make it closer to the treasure, if you make it that far.

緊急チーム火山 EMERGENCY VOLCANO TEAM gives you the task of trying to stop a bomb deep inside of the fiery mountain Also! You are piloting a prototype ship to detonate the bomb and collapse the mountain before it explodes and destroys Japan. You will get to move this ship, slowly, through the inside of the mountain and shoot rockets out into the rock. These rockets will clear away a path to you - some rocks inside are easy to break, others are unbreakable, so you will need to find the best and quickest path for you.

Once you have made it to the core of this volcano, you must drop your bomb and then make it back out within the time limit. You can boost and speed up, but if you hit the walls around you, you will take damage and lose temporary control of your ship. You will need to think on your feet and work fast to make it back to the surface in time.

STAIRSTRUCK is a funny physics based game that has you playing a slinky, rolling down the stairs! You get to choose one of three different environments to explore and one of many colored slinkys to play with. Each of these environments have a staircase (duh) and a whole environment for your slinky to explore. You start off by falling down the stairs, gaining momentum, then you can fly into the air.

In the air, depending on the environment, there are various things that you can hit. Some objects, like puffer fish, will harm you, while others like birds, will burst in a mess of coins. You can collect these coins to increase your score, but each hit against airborne objects or the stairs, will take a stab at your health. There are hearts in the air to help you last longer, as well as jet packs to keep you in the air, but eventually your slinky will be unable to continue forward. STAIRSTRUCK is just a silly, fun game to play!

The Ascension sees you playing as a fallen angel who is not trying to make it back to heaven. Though there are several staircases, there seems to be no way to climb back up them, so instead you must fall further and further into the ground. A narrator seems to want you to return to the sky, and questions your falling. You don’t have a way to communicate back, so you continue to fall and listen to the narrator talk.

As you start to get deep into the ground, the game starts to change. The narrator becomes angry with the path you are taking and your angel figure starts to darken. Your perception as a player is also manipulated - areas that you may think are walls can actually be walked through, and open areas that seem clear can be areas that you are unable to walk in. You must figure out where you need to go and where you can go to continue through to a deeper area. The Ascension has three very different endings all dependant on what you do. Listen closely to the narrator and you may be able to find them all!

Troll’s Bowel is a really adorable, informational game about the way trolls digest food. Many people think that Troll’s digestive system are much like humans, but it turns out they are not. This information is shown with super sleek cutscenes. In each stage of digestion, you get to play a minigame to help see how it works.

The first one is eating a Troll’s favorite sandwich, the next is catching and sorting food, and the final is taking the food to the factory that sits inside a troll. Each of these games are short, but quite fun to play through. Depending on how well you do, you will influence the narrative that goes along with the story. Troll’s Bowels is an adorable little game that’s fun for the whole family.

Into the Void is a challenging platformer that has you managing a rope that helps you get towards the top of the room. You start off at the top of a secret lab, but you need to make your way down to a rare plant that could hold a potential cure to a contagious virus. Getting down to the plant is pretty easy, it’s getting up once you have the flower that really gets hard.

This flower is in an inter-dimensional void that you need to lower yourself into via platforms. Once you are in the void, you will need to clear the way to the flower. There are white walls and monsters present in the void, which can kill you if you touch them. Leaving them there for the frantic race back to the lab is a bad idea, so you can shoot them away before grabbing the flower. Once you have the flower, the void starts to close in on itself, forcing you to quickly make it back to the surface.

You will need to rely on your rope to get up, but as you pull yourself upwards, the rope turns red and can snap. You will need to jump and land on platforms to relieve the tension in the rope before continuing. See if you can get enough flowers to find the cure for this virus!
