Jam Favorites: Meatly Jam

Check out some of my favorite games from the Meatly Jam!

The Meatly Jam was a game jam organized by a comic making man called Meatly. His work include awesome comics about game developing and general gaming. The theme for this jam was Life as a Game Developer. Developers had 48 hours to complete a game and could use premade assets that were made by Meatly himself. I was able to play and record all of the games entered into this jam in my video compilation series. Below are a few of my favorites, in no particular order.

Meatly March is a game where you help developers create a game! Do not fret, you are guided by a game creation fairy to hold your hand through the entire process. This fairy tells you all about the creature known as the Game Developer. You must use portals to guide the game developer through various puzzles into a computer. When a developer reaches their computer, they are able to make a game. These Game Developers are not aware of your existence, even though you will be working along side them to help them in their game development. Once you command a developer to start moving forward, they will not be able to stop again. Your task is to set up portals to take them to the exit, or else they will walk endlessly. Help developers overcome obstacles by pushing buttons and jumping on fun springs!

Dave’s Dream is a strange inception like game where you must kill yourself in order to advance. Everyday, Dave wakes up, yet still is in a dream, and tries to go farther in his puzzle of a dream life. He is sleeping a lot, due to depression as he was fired from work for making games. He needs the assistance of his old self, from the previous part of the dream to advance. To move on to the new day, you must kill yourself. This game is very challenging with little to no direction which makes it super fun to explore and figure out. Watch multiples of yourself pull levers, spin objects, and make it easier for the true you to make it through till the end.

It’s Hard Being a Meatball in this funny 3D game (which currently requires an Xbox controller), you play as a meatball. You are not a normal, boring meatball. You are a giant meatball who enjoys destroying everything! Roll out of your house and around the town, destroying everything that comes into sight. Enjoy rolling over homes, gardens, buildings, trees, basically anything. It is just a meatball type of day- a day where everything seems to be going wrong. Why not enjoy the simple pleasure of destruction!

Type Type Game Hype is a typing based game where you must type out the tasks of 3 different team members. These team members are helping you create a game! You’ll switch between these developers and type off tasks on their lists. As you do so, blocks as well as bugs can pop up. These blocks and bugs need to be typed off the task list or else the member of the team may get discouraged and give up. A watch sits on the screen telling you how much longer you have while a thermometer shows how far you are in creating your game. Multitask and manage your team in order to complete this game!

#Gamedev is a calm, addictive game where you connect colored boxes to decide how you’ll spend your time. As a game developer, you have a limited number of hours in the week. These hours must be spent on gaining a skill, doing your real job, working on your game, socializing, and your health in general. You must balance out your time by connecting boxes that are the same color to match the bar of that task. If you fill the bar, you will level up in that task. Your main goal to complete this game is to make 8 games. You must also make sure that your skill is improving so your games will be better. You should take the time to work or you will run out of money and not be able to live. There are many different endings to things game, will you become a famous game developer?

Game Dev Sim is a tycoon type game where you play as a developer trying to make his own indie game in your garage. This garage does not have any of the state of the art technology that one would have in a proper home - you even have to take baths in a muddy pond outside. You must keep your needs up in order to stay productive and make a game that can then sell on the market. If you earn enough money, you may be able to upgrade some of the things in your garage so that your needs will fill up faster. The more your needs are full, the faster you can create a game due to your productivity being higher. Be careful not to spend all your money upgrading your home or you will not have enough to make a game.

The Oddjob Developer is a game where you work the odd job a developer must work so that you can pay the bills. This specific job is at a coffee shop, as a barista. Sometimes developers must have side jobs so that they can fund their indie games. In this simple job of working at a coffee shop, your responsibilities include taking orders, grabbing the correct cup and drinks to go into them, and sending out their drink. In the back of the cafe, there is a small table where the developers of the game are having a conversation. Speech bubbles come up as the developers talk. If you have time you can read what they are saying and eavesdrop on what they plan on doing with the game. This game is very well made and I am hoping they continue it.

There are many other awesome games that were entered into this jam. You can find them here.
