The MiniLD #63 is basically a warm-up jam to get people prepared for the main event, in this case the Ludum Dare. This MiniLD was hosted by Jazzamonn. The theme for this jam was “Fusion”, encouraging developers to mix two different genres or ideas. I recorded all of the games in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.
Feed me Vikings! is a challenging mix of survival and management that has you building up your town as a dragon eats your people. Your town holds a princess, who is wanted by a hungry dragon who is looking to slowly eat everyone in the town. Each day, the dragon announces the number of people he will eat. If you have a bigger population than that number, then your princess will survive. If you do not, she will be eaten and the game will be over. You are able to buy and upgrade different buildings in your town to help you survive. Some buildings make coins, so that you can build more, whereas others add to your population or the chance of having to sacrifice villagers. Buildings can even be upgraded to do more, as long as you have the enoughf coins. Over time, if you are good enough, you may even be able to train heroes to kill the dragon and take back your town!
Plumber’s Creed is a well made Assassin’s Creed and Super Mario Bros mash-up where you must collect Abstergo’s symbols before jumping on the flag at the end of the level. In each of these 9 levels you have a specific number of symbols to collect. You will collect these by jumping into the box, hitting your head on it. There are koopas dotted around the level, pacing and waiting to see you. If you fall into their line of site, depending on the koopa, you may be shot at or chased. You have a knife to throw and a bomb to drop to defend yourself, but both of these items have a cool down time. You can also jump on the enemies head. Some of the koopas do not die, however, instead they go into their armor shell for a limited amount of time. You may have to scale walls, hide in hay, or jump around to get through the levels. It is up to you to defeat all of the koopas and win the game.
Polar Bearer is a challenging puzzle platformer that has you redirecting proton particles! With large magnets, you will be controlling where the protons go as they stream out of the starting point. The magnets push the protons away from the magnet, thus pushing them in a new direction. It is up to you to lead them to the blue portal at the end of the level. If enough of the protons make it to the portal, you will be able to move onto the next level. These protons are quite toxic, so If you touch any of these particles you will instantly die and have to redo the level. Sometimes, magnets need to be placed so that you can move beyond the particles and reach other parts of the map. If you want to pick up a magnet, you can just jump on them to get them back. You only have a few to use each level, so make sure you put them in the right place!
Tetra Invaders is a unique mix of Tetris and Space Invaders that has you trying to line up all of the bricks before they are shot away. As Tetris blocks fall from the sky, you must avoid the Space Invader ships’ bullets. These bullets will break your blocks and cause you to lose points, before they hit the bottom of the screen. Most of the time this will hinder you, as you need to line up a row of blocks to gain points. This game can be played against the computer (the PC playing the role of the ship) or as a local multiplayer between your friend. It is up to you to avoid the bullets while lining the blocks up to the right place.
Isoid is a strange, retro, isometric game inspired by a bunch of other games like Solstice, Knight Lore, and Alien 8. In this trippy world, you are exploring a large area to find different abilities like jump, shoot, and roll. These abilities seem to be inside strange totems that are dotted around. Around them there are peculiar monsters that are looking to kill you. These enemies are giant eyes that shoot, worms that move around, and devil-looking flying creatures that bash into you. There are also lakes and pools of toxic goo that is quite deadly if you fall into it. If you die, you will just respawn in the same room, still with your abilities. You can explore this unfinished world, finding lots of odd and new things to help you along the way.
Flappy Pong is a challenging game that has you controlling the ball in a Pong court. Two pong paddles move up and down on either side of the screen. In the middle is a ball as well as two pipes. The ball moves in a specific direction, normally towards the dangerous pipes or walls. You must click to cause the ball to move in the other direction to avoid dangers and hit the paddle. Once the ball hits the paddle, it will bounce off in the other direction, and the pipes will change their place. Sometimes green moving balls start to appear in the level. If you collect these, you can gain even more points. This game does take a few tries to master, but is super fun and complete with awesome retro-styled graphics.
Grim Fantasy is a brilliant, fast paced top down shooter that has you clearing levels of a dungeon. You are looking to become a hero of the town. The citizens have lost different things in the local cave due to a strange curse that they are hoping to lift. You seem to be the only person with a sword, so you need to help them get their items back. The first person you find has lost a bracelet in the cave, so you must go into it and defeat all of the slimes (which drop many coins) on each level to receive a key. This key will then open a chest to give you gold. Gold isn’t the only thing inside these caves - there are also special items that can be found and given to scientists. You may not know what these items are, but the scientist can help you so that you will have some advantages in the boss fight. There is also an Inn, to heal you, and a shop to buy weapon upgrades in the town. The monsters always seem to respawn, so you will need to be careful when going back into the cave. Can you defeat the curse and become the hero of the town?
