Jam Favorites: MiniLD #64

Check out a couple of games inspired by the Nintendo 64!

The MiniLD #64 is basically a warm-up jam to get people prepared for the main event, in this case the Ludum Dare. This MiniLD was hosted by Pekka Kujansuu. The theme for this jam was “Nintendo 64”. I recorded all of the games in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

Abstraction is a platformer-shooter which challenges you to get back the videogame world from Lord Abstract. It seems like a normal day at work - until your boss starts acting weird. It turns out some robot has replaced him, looking to end you. You must jump and shoot your way from room to room trying to save yourself. Lord Abstract, the king of all things art, is trying to destroy all games so that his art power will be stronger. In each area you are able to jump three times in the air, firing a bullet bellow you with each jump. You can also shoot your gun to destroy enemies. Once all of the enemies in a level are defeated, the door will unlock and you will be able to move on. Some enemies shoot at you, others chase you, others act like turrets shooting in one direction and some do a mix of all of those. This game has plenty of challenging enemies, different mini-bosses and even controller support. The more you defeat, the closer you are to getting to Lord Abstract.

Coin Dash is a simple game where you collect tons of coins dotted around the area. There are lots of coins - around trees, over rocks, in caves… basically everywhere. You must explore around this peaceful world and collect all the coins. Once you have all of them, you must return them to the floating diamond. This world is pretty straightforward, but very peaceful to explore! The graphics are very well done and the atmosphere is quite relaxing to jump around and explore.

Bink’s Amazing Adventure takes you into Bink’s town. This game is still in development, so at it’s current stage there are only a few things that can be done. You are in Bink’s town, all of which you can see via a small map on your screen. You can explore the land, seeing what shops have for sale and what the homes are like. If you go fishing at the local lake, you can catch some fish to sell at the shop to make money to buy items. The coins you make can also be used to buy arrows over at the archery, which you then can use to shoot targets. Sometimes this game does glitch out, but hopefully in a future build there will be more to do and less glitches! This game does show potential.
