Jam Favorites: One Game a Month; August

A few neat games made in the month of August.

The One Game a Month is a monthly game dev challenge with an optional theme. This month’s theme was “splash”. Many, many games are entered in the One Game a Month challenge every month. I decided to play all of the games that were entered in the month of August in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

Paddle & Basket is a colorful twist on a classic breakout game. In this game, as you break the blocks, items fall down. These items can be caught with a basket on the bottom of the screen. You don’t want these items to fall beyond your basket, as they will not come back. The items can be collected in secret orders to unlock different abilities. These abilities and combos can be stacked. Test your multitasking skills; keep the ball in the air and catch some items!

It’s Raining Bombs is a super fun three player game where you must avoid the bombs! If you don’t have three players, do not fret; you can also play against AI opponents. Bombs are falling from the sky which you must pick up and throw at other players. They only stay safely on the ground for a limited amount of time, as they start flashing and soon explode. You must pick them up and throw then at another player before they explode in your arms or near you. Each time you hit another player they fall off the screen and appear a few seconds later with temporary invincibility. The last couple seconds of the game becomes super intense with a final rain of many, many bombs. This game is well made and very fun to play.

This Is Not a Level is in fact a Knytt Stories level - this means you will need Knytt Stories to play this game. This level is fairly simple looking - though when you find orbs of light it changes everything. From the color of the level to the environment changing before your eyes. Enemies will start to appear as well as objects to be avoided. Sometimes different colored orbs can be found - which give you new abilities. I’m not quite sure what the goal of this level is, but it is quite fun to just run around exploring it.

Whipbit Solutions is a tycoon game that has you running a software company. You must hire different developers, each with different skills, to work at your company. Then, you are able to pick jobs that relate to those skills and try to accomplish them in the time provided. If you fail a job, you will lose money and reputation. Your goal is to have lots of money and a good reputation - though some jobs give a bad reputation but more money. You can upgrade your office, hire and train employees, raise their salary, and even give them a little motivation by whipping them! Try and get as much money possible without whipping your employees to death.

Museum of Parallel Art is a beautiful two player experiment where you take a trip to an art museum. This experience can be played with a friend, or even a stranger, as it is sure to get some conversation flowing. You are given lots of different cards - each with a different picture on it, such as sleeping cats, a fist, birds, and fire. These cards can be placed at each art piece. Once you have placed a card at each exhibit, the cards are flipped over and it’s the other player’s turn. There will be some cards left over. The other player must go through and put cards at each piece of art as well. After you both have placed your cards, not watching each other, you will both go through and see what cards were placed at which piece of art. You both can talk about how you feel about the art and your interpretation of each of the cards. This game is very well made and is sure to stir up some interesting conversation.

Lustre is a puzzle platformer where you can only see part of the level that is lit up. Use your mouse to light up part of the level. This will be the only part of the level that you can see. You are able to shoot towards targets to make platforms move. Your goal is to get to the end of each level, though you can collect stars for bonus points. As you go through the level your lantern will become dark. You must collect more lanterns to add on to the light you have. If you run out of light or fall off the platforms, the game will be over. Soon, you can find different objects that block targets or that redirect bullets. Can you make it through all of these dark levels?
