Jam Favorites: One Game a Month; September

Check out some fantastic games made in the month of September!

The One Game a Month is a monthly game dev challenge with an optional theme. This month’s theme was “30 Seconds”. Many, many games are entered in the One Game a Month challenge every month. I decided to play all of the games that were entered in the month of September in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

Rat Attack is a fairly simple arcade game about a cat and some rats. You, a nice tabby cat, were left home for the day while your owners went out. These owners bought you so that you could fix the rat problem in their house. Clearly, you have been slacking off. As a punishment, the owner says that you have until he comes home tonight to get rid of the rat problem, or it will be no food for a week! Unbothered and thinking you had plenty of time, you decided to sleep while he was out. Well, now you have woken up with only 30 seconds left to kill all of the rats in the room before the owner comes inside! Hurry now, they are everywhere!

SpaceTimeWar! is a space shooter that has you defending the warp core. You are a ship that is looking to defend the warp core, which is located in in the center of your screen. Other ships spawn in looking to destroy it with their purple bullets. You must destroy those ships and shoot at the core. If you shot the core, the core will gain more life. You only have a limited number of bullets, so you must make sure you destroy the other ships and replenish the life of the core - all while watching your time of thirty seconds. If you defend the core for thirty seconds, you will win. Don’t worry about yourself, just protect the core!

Amanda Cluett is a history inspired clicker-type game based on a time before women had rights. You play as Amanda Cluett, a women who earns enough money to help out charities. As the seconds pass, money gets deposited into your account. You get to choose what the money is spent on. Things like books, dresses, sewing machines and furniture can be bought. As you purchase these items, you also get the option to donate them to different funds; like a public library or a free institute to give women education. Each time you donate a number of items to a specific group, some story will come in. These little bits of story add to the gameplay and educate you on what you are doing and why. This clicker is quite fun to play. Read the news, donate to charity, and help the world.

Gogo Gets the Glow is a neat point and click game about a girl named Gogo. Gogo’s father is a police officer and she hopes to be one too someday. One day, Gogo’s dad is shouting on the phone about some case pertaining to the new drug ‘Glow’. Gogo decides to go and check out the crime scene and see what she can find. This starts her epic adventure to find out what happened to the Glow. This game does have some minor spelling errors and some typos, but it’s still playable. Can you figure out what happened to the Glow?

SciAnts is an Android game that has you smashing space bugs! You are an astronaut in space, trying to eat your lunch. The only problem is all these damn space bugs. These bugs walk along your tray, picking up your food and trying to take it away. You must smash these bugs, as well as pick up food and hold it to eat. Some bigger foods take more than one bite, so you can either hold it for all the bites, or hold it for a couple and let it fall. After each tray is cleared a new tray will come, killing off the bugs that were left there. Each time a bug is killed, some green goop goes into a bar. This bar will level up your abilities and allow you to kill the stronger bugs that come. Try and eat your lunch in peace!
