Jupi's Gems: Cubes and Dimension

Don't be that guy.

So, this is less of a review and more of my experience with a game. I was asked to do a review of Cubes and Dimensions for my YouTube Channel. The developer, Rosden Shadow, was someone I have not heard of, someone new to GameJolt, however he seemed nice so I figured what the heck, why not add his game to my list of requests.

Now, here is where I, like most other game players, judged the game without playing it. I took a look at the grey looking game with a few different block colors and though “Hm, another semi-crappy indie game” and let the game sit in my inbox for a bit. I came back to the game a few times, read the description, which just talked about a puzzle game and the time that it should take me to complete it. Finally, left without a video for a while, I thought “well, lets get this over with” and excited as always started to record.

To my surprise, this little puzzle game is truly astounding. After playing some basic puzzle levels, I started to get engaged by the story. I found that the game was not always gray, but sometimes was super colorful, in order to add another level to the simple puzzles, that soon become quite difficult. The story is what mainly kept me interested, I found myself wondering what happened next. Some main voice in this story is watching the main character. That voice talks about ancients, elders, murderers, the past, secrets, and even the machine that the player is to use to solve these puzzles. I got attached to the voice that was helping me out, that was going against his tribe and risking it all for no reason other than curiosity. I continued to play these extremely well done puzzles, that took me through dimensions. The puzzles were pretty straight forward, push some cubes into buttons, sometimes there is lava or wind currents to play around with. There were also these dotted lines, that when crossed, would change the look of the level. This new look would add color and sometimes walls where there had not been any. Some levels were more of tests about getting timing right, others were just easy getting from point A to point B. One puzzle even involved helping out another creature, who was much like myself.

This game is full of mystery, sometimes little spheres pop up in levels, but the player is never told directly what they are. I was just forced to keep going on, wondering if the “brothers” in the tribe were going to end up destroying me, capture me as they had planned and tried to do. The voice in the story could only do so much to help out. In the end, I was really happy that I had played the game; impressed even. Sometimes, games aren’t all about the cute graphics. Sometimes, its the story that makes you fall in love.
