Boby In Miracle Land!

LATE BUT anyway Hi, my name is Marcus. It's been two years since Boby in Miracle Land was released on March 1, 2023. I'd like to recap and share some interesting facts and show some sprites that have never been seen by the public.

My first big game, Man in Madness, Boby in Miracle Land, had a series of discarded ideas and others that I forgot to include in the game, some of which would have made the game unbalanced and useless in terms of gameplay progress.

At the beginning of development, I was still learning how to do programming, art, music, and other elements.

My friends from the striker team gave suggestions on how the game would be if something were placed in a certain place, and I went ahead and put it into practice.

I studied game development courses, the engine itself, and looked at several tutorials. The result of seven long years was worth it.

I have it in a notebook specifically for this game, containing all the original concepts.

This is one of the first sprites of Boby.

He was supposed to be more stretched out, with a yellowish color close to orange.

Since I didn't know how to make pixel art, I decided to search the internet for a sprite sheet that looked familiar to the character's design, and miraculously I found one that was perfect for the project. The origin of this sprite came from this video, showing a template for a fighting game in Construct 2 created by Nemezes Games.

After downloading it, I tried to edit the image using Paint (yes, Microsoft Paint, I didn't have Aseprite :_)).

At that moment, I stopped feeling ashamed and created my first sprite and first enemy for the game “Bloken”

a square goomba, except that instead of being crushed, it would be punched.

Bloken underwent some minor changes during development, but for me, it is well recognized in the game.

I had never even heard of Aseprite when you sent me the sprite sheet, and my eyes lit up when I saw one of my creations come to life.

In version 2.0 of the demo, the game title underwent a drastic change. After all, it was still in the prototype stage. In the word “land,” each letter represented an element that reflected the theme of the worlds in the game.

L - Plains

A - Snow

N - Huugmongus sky

D - Lockmess Water

A snow world was planned for the game, involving mechanics from Ninja Gaiden 2 in the second part of the game, where the character would face a windstorm that would pull him back, slowing him down.

However, this was discarded because it was too complicated to implement at the time, when I was still learning.

Again, in version 2.0 of the demo, at the beginning of the game you control Boby freely, with a forest setting featuring a house and a sign next to it saying “world 1 plains.”

The house belonged to Boby and was going to be part of the game's story. King Mush was being planned into the story and was going to capture Boby's girlfriend.

It was discarded because it was OBVIOUSLY cliché and similar to Super Mario Bros.

(In the second screenshot, it would not have been possible to enter Boby's house; it was meant to be an imagination of what it would be like inside, and the painting is the famous Brazilian painting “Abaporu” by Tarsila Amaral).

Background

The background and other parts of the scenery are originally from the Open Game Art website, including the floor tileset, background, the GIANT grass under the scenery, the cloud, and the heart system, which came from a tutorial channel called Goldskull Tutorials.

I wanted to base it on Super Mario Bros. 3. @studioundertale made the miniature Boby sprites to be placed, and I did the rest. At that time, I was practicing in Aseprite thanks to @altirra , who gave me a version of Aseprite as a gift so I could play around with it.

Discarded due to a series of changes and complications with the grid movement that prevented it from being finalized.

FUN FACT: In the first stage of Lochmess, when you find a part where the rocks form Lord Mush's face on top of the crown right in the middle, there is a sprite of Boby with a hat with very low opacity. When you click on it, you will unlock the MENTLEGEN achievement.

Flashcards

At the time, these flashcards weren't going to be used in the game, just thumbnails for achievements. Upon completing each world, you would unlock an achievement.

It's crazy to think that I was thinking of leaving a turtle like that for the Lochmess world XD. My favorite has to be the fourth one, because it shows how scary this world would be, like look at Jerry with his bulging eyes

OH YES, that's Jerry, he was going to be an enemy in the game, he had a redesigned look and then was discarded

he would grab you and throw you on top of the Hallows Eve levels

CO-OP

The game was going to have the option of having a partner by your side during the game stages,

a character who was supposed to be Boby's brother, “Tutory,” was going to help. It was discarded because the game was going to focus on single player and the story would have to be changed because of the character.
