Let's Talk about Armour

The previous Grimstorm didn’t do much in terms of armour - you could upgrade it’s defence value by finding secrets scattered around the map, but that was it. I’m looking to significantly upgrade armour’s role in the games to come though!

In Grimstorm: Colosseum, I plan on having the players choose between three types of armour set - light, normal and heavy, as well as choosing the weapon they’d like to wield (more on this in a later news post).

  • Light armour favours evasive moves over defensive ones. You’ll be able to perform more rolls, backflips and aerial jolts (a horizontal shift whilst in mid-air), but you’ll take more damage if you get hit. If you choose this kind of armour, you’ll be more focused on dodging attacks and attacking at the right moment, rather than going in guns blazing.

  • Normal armour doesn’t favour anything in particular. It’s a balanced one that can perform both evasive and defensive moves, but not as effectively as the other two sets. This is best for those who want to react to the situation with the best kind of move.

  • Heavy armour favours defensive moves over evasive ones. You’ll take reduced stamina damage when blocking with a shield, and shield strikes will cost less stamina to perform. You’ll suffer from less knockback when you get hit too.

What are your thoughts on having armour like this? It’s much different from the previous game, but I wanted to flesh it out whilst keeping it simplistic. What kind of armour set will you be favouring and why?

The next beta release should focus on adding the final weapon skills, as well as balancing out some of them. After that, I’d like to try and implement this armour mechanic.
