"So, there was this one game on the Nintendo Wii, known as Mario Party 2020 (or so people have been told). It's an awful game with no amount of replay value. Mario Party games are known to have the dreaded curse of "Trying to unlock everything while having everything on very hard". This one is no exception, as there are still new secrets to unlock even if you've played it dozens of times.
The Wii Version's user interface is dreadful, so it makes everything worse, because you have to use the Wii Remote pointed at the screen just to move the cursor, while the Num-chuk to select things. That is the reason why this game failed, for the most part. As for the game itself, I would say it's on the easy to medium difficulty level.
I think that the characters are nice looking and have plenty of options, including skins. The only problem I have with them is that they all have a generic, ugly Japanese look to them. All of the female characters look terrible, except for Pinky (Or Peach, in this case, we'll get to the renames later), who can be unlocked for a bonus, so I guess there's that. All of the male characters look so generic it makes me wonder if the person designing them had ever seen actual people and how they have different body types. All of the characters seem so out of place on an NES game. Also, their names are completely different; Mario is now named "Mario Superstar", Toad is now called "Toad King", Wario is now called "Wario Commando" (Other characters are also called by their real name), and Princess Daisy is now named "Peach Princess". That last one is kind of annoying since she isn't princess peach! How did they get that wrong!?
Speaking of getting things wrong, there are no mushroom characters. Mushroom characters are the best thing about the Mario series. They have the best moves and upgrades, and they're available at a lower price point. Mushroom characters supposedly don't exist in this game because of a retcon in Mario Party 0, a prequel to this game. Still, I haven't seen a mushroom in a game since Mario Party 3 on the N64, and that game is the second-best Mario game ever. People act like that game is overrated. THIS is the overrated one!
Anyway, there's a total of 9 Game Boards: "Peach's Castle" and "Spike's Observatory" are the two original ones, "Lum Road" and "Doll Clearway" are the two new ones, "Smashville" and "Water-Country" are in Smash Mode, and "Ice Land" and "New Bowser's Galaxy" are in story mode. There's also another board known as "The Eternal Fortress", but that's an unlockable after you beat story mode.
Yeah, side note but... all the boards STINK. Firstly, the map graphics on the maps and the character graphics on the characters look like they were created in Paint. You can tell this is a game designed for children. The characters don't have the same as they did in the character select. Secondly, the boards do not have any coherency: Peach's Castle, for example, has two different levels; one above ground, and one... somehow below it? Other than that, the map graphics and character graphics do not match each other or the board's color scheme. Also, some of the game boards seem completely random; for an example of that, look at the board known as "Lum Road".
I HATE that board for its randomness: The board's structure is completely random. It's a yellow circle with no number on it. You just put whatever color you want in there. No rhyme or reason! The rest of the board is pretty much like a normal galaxy-style stage, with the exception that it's in the style of a Party Board.
Also, the minigames are loathsome, a total of about 120, but let's go through a select few: "Shoot-O-Max", "Jackie Chan Stunt Show", "Mario Cart", "Yoshi's Island" (My fave...? Eh, kinda), and "Mario Paint". I think the three of them are decent. Jackie Chan Stunt Show is weirdly racist, but I'm not a fan of Mario Paint, because of how you win: The game randomly gives you a crown, and you can either put it on the character you currently have as a crown-holder, or you can take it and be the crown-holder for the rest of the game. With that said, the crown will only allow you to DRAW, while the others need to guess what you're drawing. What?
As for the game's story mode... it's bad; especially with how much I've played of it. If you can, do not play this game as Peach (OH I'M SORRY, "Pinky"). This game's main antagonist, Bowser Jr., and playing as Peach will get you NO MORAL BACKGROUND, NO POINT OF VIEW, and NO CHALLENGES! Oh, and you get no prize for beating it as Peach.
The only reason I can think of why Peach is a villain in the story mode is that "everyone" seems to hate her, but thankfully, she's not as annoying as Bowser Jr., who I never liked, by the way.
Overall Score: 2/10, This game is horrid!
