I've just mentioned I've been playing the new Kirby game but I wanted to further make a topic on gaming while game developing. I have all my gaming devices always near my workstation with a slew of games that I like to play and tinker around in while I'm doing my work. Generally this is more about studying the game mechanics of these other games to help incorporate them into my own design.
I don think this is unusual for developers to be goofing around and gaming between doing their work. I remember reading up on how the folk at ID Software played around on a SNES while developing DooM way back in the day. Its fun, relaxing and it helps to clear the brain when on some hard hitting task in the dev cycle.
My current arsenal are pretty much your typical standard platforming and metroidvania fair, from simple games like Super Mario and Kirby to the more complex games like Metroid, Castlevanias Cave Story and even Shantae!
To any fellow would-be devs out there, what sort of games are you playing to help you along in your work?
On a sort of off topic here whatever games I don't have in physical portable form in the picture I have a slew of main retro consoles roms on a collection of emulation devices. I'm pretty damned stacked when it comes to personal gaming, I'm never really bored xD
