The Central Penitentiary of Costa Rica, popularly known as "the peni ", operated from the beginning of the 20th century until its final closure in the 1970s, serving as the main prison.
After its closure and abandonment, the building was remodeled and converted into the headquarters of the Costa Rican Center for Science and Culture, which houses the Children's Museum.
