quick status update


hi, this isnt, like, an official devlog post or anything. i'll address this fully in the next full proper devlog, just wanted to give a small status update for people here

i was taking it easy during january and february and did very little work on the game during that time (though floppo added napstablook and alphys and i did fix a few bugs). i'm officially feeling recharged and started working on the game proper again, so that's pretty awesome!

floppo is currently busy making a really cool ralsei for the game rivals of aether (an indie smash bros clone with support for custom content), so that's kinda what she's mainly focussed on for the time being. and when she isn't working on ralsei, she's working on fh!storyshift. even right now, she's already making plans for another custom character as part of a jam, so while she isn't completely unable to work or anything, it is still worth noting that she isn't completely available either.

regarding releases, we kinda started piling way too much on our to-do list for 0.2, so we decided to split all planned releases into multiple smaller updates. none of the content will be scrapped, it basically just means that the version that would've been called "0.2" will be called something else and before then there will be multiple smaller versions that add fewer things from what's planned for that version. this means that the name of the version to be released to gamejolt will not be "0.3" and as of right now i cannot estimate what it will be called, but the general plans of "i want most of legacy's content and features to be there before i release the game to gamejolt" still holds true.

let's talk about that for a second real quick. i've seen some people still be confused, if not outright upset over current releases of the game being exclusive to the discord server. i am incredibly sorry that there are people out there who cannot join our discord server and thus may be unable to play the game. if you can reach out to a friend who is on the server and can provide you with a download link, i do not mind that. however, as it stands right now, the game is not in a state where i could, in good faith, release it to gamejolt. the game is still a little unstable, which isn't really ideal for an environment with little to no means for direct communication. very importantly though, i believe that people who aren't aware of the game's development context may be put off by the current releases of the game, as they are not only lacking the ruins with their encounters and such, but also various legacy skins and, most importantly, pvp. pvp is such a staple feature of mto legacy and the main reason why people on the discord still play legacy occasionally. releasing the game to gamejolt without this content would be an extremely bad idea.

i've seen some people say "then just add those skins and pvp". for one, that's just not how that works. there isn't a magic "add pvp" button i can click and be done with it. just for pvp alone i would first need to add a party sytem where players can be in the same battle together, i would need to add a party chat to the battle screen, i would need to ensure attacks are all properly synchronized between players, i'd need to ensure the battle state as a whole is properly synchronized, so on and so forth. then i'd need to actually design UI for initiating pvp, i'd have to make a pvp enemy that acts based on another player's inputs, et cetera. but secondly, this simply isn't a priority right now. there are other things being worked on before all of that. long story short, it's just not that simple.

i understand people are eager for a gamejolt release, but please be patient.

there are some more things i wanna discuss, but i'll save those for the proper devlog. until then, i'll try posting some more previews to the gamejolt community. have a good one
