Yesterday I announced the return and rewrite of Insanity, but I suspect this rewrite will take a while to complete. To not leave you in the dark I will occasionally post some status updates like this one.
I am currently rewriting the core mechanics of the game, including the player source code, Slenderman, kill screen, pages, etc. On the programming front this part takes the longest time but at the same time it's one of the most fulfilling parts. I have a very good portion of this gameplay core done already, with Slenderman having a lot of his intended behavior working. Slenderman himself will behave a bit differently from now on:
The static effect will be weaker, Slenderman as a threat will depend more on proximity instead
As little RNG as possible, ensuring a more coherent gameplay whose difficulty is easier to adjust
Aggressive teleportation behavior: Slender can get right behind you regardless of prior distance while still giving you a fair chance of surviving, just make sure to look behind every now and then
"Creeper" teleportation: Slender will not teleport to where you are looking at, staying behind you most of the time. This behavior might change in the future if it makes the game too easy
Resting periods: When his aggression level is low, Slender can disappear out of the blue, making things silent for a little while
Safe from afar: If Slender is far from you, looking at him cannot result in death
After I finish the core rewrite, I will move on to creating the first level map. I will port many models and textures to the new Insanity version but I will likely not port the maps themselves.
So here is what is needed to be done for now:
Finish rewriting the core gameplay (player, Slender, pages, death and victory, etc)
Port some of the old assets and replace others
Make the first level and its map
Create the main menu
Add settings for graphics, sound, etc
Add AZERTY keyboard layout support for the beautiful french people
Once all of this is done, the first version of the rewrite might be ready to be released. It will have less content than the current Insanity version but I believe it will be a much more balanced and entertaining experience, and of course with time I hope to add more levels and content.
