Hey everyone, BadRapper here.
I have decided to remove One Night at Hippo's from the backburner and cancel its development.
One Night at Hippo's originated as a submission for the first Halloween Game Jam on itch over a half a year ago(near the end of October). The game started as a very simple idea, which I wanted to make into a game. Of course it is the fewest of ideas that come out complete from the get-go, so I brainstormed for much of the development time, which led to me becoming more and more interested in the game as time went on. This is why the game ended up becoming bigger than any of I had expected when I first set out to develop it.
However, there are several factors which have led to the decision of cancellation:
Inadequacy
Aside from new and/or previous work taking over our time, I had in late Decemeber begun to realize issues with portions of the game’s design. The visuals of the office were too bland, the code became unstructured as the game evolved, and the music wasn’t up to my standards.Time
I Have been in a hard time with school it hasn't been easy my grades aren't looking to good which, left me no time to develop One Night at Hippo's, I was hoping It could become a part of the Fazbear Fanverse which of course there is way better fan games than the one I so desparately wanted to create (I don't think I had the chance to get in but still had my hopes up.) I have One Night at Foxy's 2 to see to. (and even though those are my biggest projects currently, there are smaller potential things growing beside them). This means, I was to continue developing One Night at Hippo's in the future, it would likely be a couple of years away, which would only exaggerate the first point.Fanverse
There were discussions on One Night at Hippo's on how I wanted this potentially partaking in the Fazbear Fanverse, however it would likely have been difficult since the game is not known very well and uses a different engine than Clickteam Fusion (Scratch) and since the game contains references to More graphic deaths than FNAF itself and bad reputation.
Though, cancellation in this particular case does not mean that all of my effort is wasted.
There is still a possibility of using the game’s code-base and part of the game design for a different project in the future, which would save a lot of work! Aside from recycling the project, working on One Night at Hippo's has taught me a lot when it comes to working on games, and as a game developer. I can certainly say I have become a much better game programmer and sprite animator because of One Night at Hippo's, not to mention it was my first time coding a FNAF-based game and designing a larger game structure as needed for a fan game! I got to write interactive character dialogue and design expressive characters, and even composed the entire OST. I had my first proper go at making pixel art and made all the backgrounds, among other things. My point is that I came out with more experience in game development than when I started. With this, I am certain that cancellation is the best path for One Night at Hippo's, as opposed to just prolonging its hiatus.
Lastly, I will discuss and reveal the gameplay and story of One Night at Hippo's in an upcoming post! We will make an announcement with the date and time later on, as well as a few more images, so be sure to check them out! Never Forget that this game could get uncanceled
