So, now that the new version is out, you may be wondering: What’s next?
Well, I’d like to start by explaining the very loose, basic story structure the game is currently planned to feature, but I won’t discuss any significant plot details or significant spoilers while discussing the basic layout of the story.
The game is actually going to feature 2 stories: One about stopping the <REDACTED*> Uprising, and one story path about discovering your past. The current plan is that the story about stopping the <REDACTED†> Uprising will allow you to tackle its challenges in any order (aside from the proper grand finale), whereas the current plan for the story about discovering your past is that it will be more linear and technically optional to “beating” the game.
This brings me quite well into my second thing to explain, which does maybe involve a few minor spoilers, which have been spoiler-marked: The first of those stories features the <REDACTED*> Uprising as the main villains, as you can probably guess. However, I haven’t properly introduced you to a second villain group yet, which will be encountered in the “discover your past” story arc. The second group of villains in 404: Past Not Found is called the Quantum Institute.
MINOR POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOLLOW
This mysterious group of characters will do everything in their power to impede your progress while you’re trying to learn about your past. Why are they so determined to stop you, though? Is it or is it not related to your attempts to figure out who you truly are? You’ll just have to wait and see for yourself.
Hey, I did say minor spoilers, and I did say potential spoilers, were you expecting anything more significant than that?
Anyways, the first thing I’m going to do for the game will more likely than not be finishing up Productown completely, which will ideally include plenty of NPCs, and maybe a few mini-games as well.
After that’s all said and done, though, I’m currently planning to start work on the second town. The current plan for the second town will be to have it as the first town tied to the “discover your past” part of the story, to allow players to finally get started on that part of the story. Somewhere along the line, I’ll also probably improve the save/load system for the game.
What I do from there is currently undecided, and may partially depend on player feedback.
That all being said, though, I’m going to be focusing my game development on another project of mine for a little while now, so it’ll probably be at least a little while before those changes are made.
Hopefully this gives you a general idea on what kinds of updates you can expect next.
