Hello,it's been two years since shadows fuck up macdonalds released which has not only jumped started my career as a fnafb developer,but it also got me second place for the jam it was made
I'm sorry to say for such a occasion there isn't anything amazing planned,a remake idea came to mind but i have so much stuff to do it's better off held in the future
...i also don't want to mess it up,i know a lot of people like SFUM despite my rather mixed feelings on it which i'll get into
i suppose this dev log of sort is a good enough compromize for the fact there is no remake
let's begin shall we?
Why the fuck was SFUM created?
i wanted to get into the fnafb fandom so i joined the gj server about 2 years ago,during said time a jam happend
before making SFUM i was making a OFF fangame,it was very ambitious and got nowhere
i pretty much wasted 2 years of my life on nothing
...which is rather depressing,
regardless i thought this jam was a good idea since i had to make the best of the time i had
the duo themeing was rather intresting so i don't regret joining
as to why the shadows out of all people?
i like them...and had some assets laying around for freddy
so i just recolored freddy and then made s.bonnies sprites
he glitches in and out as i was way too lazy to actually give him normal sprites which hey at least made him unqie
I was craving macdonalds at the time so i went with the plot of those two fucking up macdonalds
Characterization and plot
I'll be honest,i winged that shit from the start to end...for the most part
like you'd think the ending gag with g.freddy dying to the first cam in act 2 to be planned from the start right?
nope,packie told me to add that in because it would be funny
while now it is a canon event that will have a lot of consequences...this winging bullshit for the story is why i'm not a fan of SFUM itself,it has less work and dedication than something like AEN or Repanic
i guess my improv skills are quiet good in that regard considering people praise SFUM for the humor
regardless,little to no thought was put into stuff besides "i want x or y"
the ONLY character that is a exception for this is lever chan
her whole thing came from
"okay,how do i make getting the second switch engaging?"
after scrapping a boulder moving puzzle which is where greenbear came from as he was used there
leverchan dating sim came from the fact i hate those and wanted to make the equivalent of a "anti dating sim"
which is why it's so bullshit and annoying,
and what i call bad game desgin
the snow area encouter is a sonic.exe/yandere parody
with the slowed down movement and such
last encouter being a parody of those fangirl/simps delusional fans
it's probably the only thing i like about SFUM writing wise as i actually put some thought into her apperances
the only other one being the bunnster ciggy ad
i actually kinda wrote it with a old friend group and got help to make the s.bonnie and freddy sprites from them!
said group friend fell apart later on but this reminds me of the good times we had
the other thing i planned out was OMC and cassidys roles where to be had
if you couldn't tell,i am a BIG fan of old man consequences
so what better way to include him than to try to tie up fnaf lore into this?
i think fnaf lore can work pretty well into fnafb as long as you try to work into the story in a dynamic way
hell,since SFUM i've been pushing fnaf lore shit more often
like collection in ffsp repanic is the stuffed phone girl rather than a empty suit devoid of life being brought to life
Regardless,the killer this time around being ronalds daughter rikka came from the fact a japense comercial uses a female ronald macdonald so her facset is based off her
Rikka was supposed to play a much bigger role,i'm talking a entire sfum prequel called "Killer Clown Girl Simulator" focused around her journey to the linch king castle in the artic to learn necromancy
this was briefly in development after the jam ended but it quitely got canned,there isn't much to the current build anyways...at most you can see the window skin i made for it
but what pains me the most,was the cut dark route
it had a lot of work put into it writing wise but in general it would've just clashed so hard with sfum normal route story and writing tone
it would've been s.freddy getting more and more tierd of doing this shit and abandoning getting food with s.bonnie to hang out with a broken shadow springtrap in need of repairs
so the quest changes to helping him become fixed by taking parts from the bosses and lastly shadow bonnie himself
ending with mister cupcake trying to stop us and truning into a machoke with a brown thong(i'm serious) before s.freddy eats him alive and burns down the macdonalds
S.Freddys characterization here would've changed A LOT
from what is a pretty level headed straight man to a heartless jackass that would feed bunnster his organs out of boredom
to some degree i'm glad it never got out as i can see getting a lot of backlash for it being "too edgy"
it's just one of the manyt things that never got the see the light of day
...speaking of which
Gameplay
I kinda put some thought into it...keyword:kinda
sadly i had the experience of 90 year old grandma with dementia in terms of game desgin so there's a lot of...wrong things with SFUM
i'll start off with S.Freddy and bonnies movesets alongside general idea
Since you have two fuckers only i had to somehow strike a balance for the two,so i thought...why not a tank and glasscanon?
they cover each other in what they do...rigggghht?
as you may or may not know,this has resulted in a heavy inbalance
shocker to none,speed is VERY good in 2k3
resulting in s.bonnie being the better member as s.freddy is slow as a fucking turtule
moveset wise 2k3 is very limiting so i kinda just had to hopet that the elemental system made up for the lackluster depth
what didn't help was both s.bonnie and freddy having backup bash
s.freddys being a 70% acc one with scaling that ignores defense while s.bonnie having a 15% chance to inflict 20% 1 turn Poison degen
which kinda resulted in the balance being dead
BUT THAT'S THE FIRST PART ONLY
due to how i made the skills,shit kinda falls apart later on due to weaker scaling
so shadow march has no reason to be used over unscrew or mega bite
using the fnaf world movesets came from a moment of lazyness so i don't have to FULLY make up original movesets
...maybe it was a bad idea,maybe it was a good one i don't know
what also doesn't help the balance is the lackluster passives that came oout from the fact of how limting 2k3 is
s.freddy dualweilding and s.bonnie having better guard
...when no one uses guard unless it's a charge attack
the elemental system is also very half assed
as my dear buddy frash once asked
"if the elemental system is so important,why are the elemental skills optional?"
truth is,i wanted more content to squueze in so fuck player basics when you can work your way for the skills
hooowwww funnnnn
in general i don't think the elemental system works well here
barely little to none of the armor and weapons even impact the damn thing
and shit like s.bonnies multi elemental skill trivilies the whole thing since why bother setting up when he can just spam that?
and so are the alt equipment
a lot of it isn't worth it and meme worthty like the red dildo heavly handicapping your speed for a high attack when you're so fucking slow the +500 attack isn't worth it
or the fishing rod which makes scream aoe...wow that's so good,not like i have OTHER better aoe options
there's other stuff that annoys me like the items
you get so many dot infliction ways if you do some optional bullshit that it's just not worth bothering with actual damage
sure,you can only have one at a time but...you can just reapply shit
SFUM is a deeply flawed game to its core as not only the items,equipment and skills have issues but so do bosses
golden ronald is not a fun time and he's super tedious for no reason other than "true end boss = very difficult bc dedication" in my eyes
a lot of the late game enemies are just very unbalanced and fucking wreck you
...i sure love enemies with 100% HP revive,that's fun
isn't it?
bosses aren't fun either,most of them are just big beefy HP walls without anything intrest or to write home about
some have gimicks but shit like nightmare lever chan swapping s.bonnies and s.freddys stats is more annoying than anything as now the tank has the physical power of a fucking BRANCH DIPPED IN GASOLINE AND BROKEN IN HALF
the only thing i like about SFUM gameplay wise is mot of the maps i made,i still think to this day the parts and service is my best dungeon from a level making stand point
while the final era is the best one from a gameplay standpoint as it does a lot of different bullshit
...even if the quizz questions are rather specific and obtuse at times
there's so much i could've done better about SFUM if i had the experience i have today and put more care into the story and gameplay
in general i see it as one of my lower end of quality games
but it's also the equivalent of lighting in a bottle,
i struck gold and it's what started my fnafb career so i have to hold it dearly and respect it
in general my relationship and the way i see SFUM has been very mixed for a long long time and it won't change any time soon
out of my 2k3 duology of games,i would say FHS does what SFUM wanted to do but better in every way possible.
...Now what?
A SFUM remake will come in the distant future,
a attempt on my end to fix what i see wrong with it
in addition having new story beats and content
i'll leave you with this,
Another Erotic Night is canon.
It happens before SFUM and everything established by it will carry over into the remake
once the remake is out,the original SFUM won't be canon anymore as both would clash too much with so many things
