Hay! Kasssm speaking, as always! :3
It's the 15th of September, meaning today is UNDERTALE's anniversary! Eight years flies by when you're too busy not releasing projects and stuff :P
However! We've got some exciting news this month, contrary to the filler that was last months devlog...
The Sans Encounter is (essentially) Finished
Over the course of the past month, @Ari7 has worked non-stop on getting this done, which she has! Focus was decided to be put on this so it didn't have to be a burden later in development, where we'd then end up scrapping it to just release the game already.
Totalling at double the length of the original Sans fight accompanied by both remixed and completely new attacks, we definitely believe it is a great take on the idea of a Snowdin Sans fight! However...
Clearing up the Sans Fight concern
We don't want people to be turned off by the fact that, oh, I came to play a Papyrus fight! Not another Sans fight! We completely understand that.
SO!
Instead of being forced to battle Sans before you fight Papyrus, the battle will be optional post-game content unlocked after you beat the Papyrus fight once on any route (besides one specific one).
This also isn't to say everything else was completely put aside just to focus on the funny skeleton. Papyrus is fine :>
Sans Encounter Gameplay
Below you'll be able to see various previews of gameplay, though we also don't intend on showing everything! Just select things we think work nicely :3
Potential Classic Mode
It's been an idea since very early belief days, but we've considered the idea of allowing the option to switch between our sprites and Undertale-styled sprites!
You also get another attack, woah!
It is fully implemented in the Sans fight, however, the problem with it comes in the Papyrus fight;
with the sheer amount of framework and assets that fight has, it'd be a huge effort to remake them all in different styles just for a novelty;
but who knows! I don't :P
Now, of course, we aren't showing you all of the good stuff. I mean, there's a whole new gimmick that we haven't even shown! However, that'll remain unseen until later development, along with the rest of the fight as a whole.
Alright! Actual substance... woah... and we aren't even done! Let's talk about the guys this project is focused on!
The Papyrus Fight
Now! Unlike the Sans fight, this hasn't been finished in a month, unfortunately. Though with this newfound pace, who knows how long it could be? :)
For now, though, you'll have to keep living with really awesome previews of the fight instead! So, what's new?
Visual Improvements
We've decided to add some flare to Frank! We feel like he wasn't as expressive as Papyrus, so what way to fix that then to make his signature move way cooler?
Fun fact, this came about due to a piece @RynoGG made which I really liked! You can check that out by clicking here.
This may not be final, but its definitely there :P
New Dodges
It may be getting excessive, but we've decided to give Papyrus even more dodges! We've shown one of these on my Discord server, but the other has never been shown!
Other things!
Outside of generally cracking away at the fight itself, we've also started chipping away at phase 2! It's not top priority since there's still much to be done for phase 1, but we're getting there! :3
I want to try and keep phase 2 very allusive, as it's definitely not what people would expect, so trying to talk about it at all is pretty hard lol
We're at that stage in the Papyrus fight where showing stuff means showing the really awesome spoiler-y cool stuff which by now I think I've made clear that I'm very against showing, but rest assured! Things are going amazing.
Conclusion
Well! That was surely something, for once!
We wanted to make sure we could deliver some good news for Undertale's 8th Anniversary and I feel like we were able to do just that! With every update we slowly inch closer to a conclusion :3
With this, though, updates will definitely show down until we feel confident on the state of the game coming to that point. We'll be trying to show off stuff here and there, but I can't guarantee that it'll be much!
As always, we thank you for taking your time to read up on our quirky fan-made project and we hope to see you again in the coming months :D
