Jeroen's Indie Reviews

This review will be rather short, I think, but I want to applaud this work.

This is a replication of a game which was originally released as an arcade machine only. According to the developer of this replication the original was released by Taito in 1975, and hey, that's also the year in which I got the "honor" to be exposed to daylight for the first time.

The game was replicated in Unity. When reviewing a game like this one must take the possibilities computers had back in the day, and the attempt the developer made to replicate the old experience of computers back then.

Unfortunately this game is multi-player only, and now you cannot network play. Such features didn't exist back in 1975. The rules are easy. You and your opponent are desperados, and you must just kill each other. A 90 second timer runs and when you are out of time the game is over and the one who killed the other most wins the game. There are a few things to keep in mind. If you hit a cactus, it will be removed, but that can help both you and your opponent or both be at disadvantage, your choice, so be careful with that, and when you hit the hills the bullet will go a strange course, and I found out they can even lead to the bullet bouncing back on you, so killing yourself is possible.

When it comes to copyright issues, strictly speaking the game is still copyrighted, making this replication illegal, although I do not expect too much trouble for it. Personally I am happy that there are people still doing this in order to preserve the original arcade feeling, as it is a part of history now (and they cannot tell me that Taito, or whoever owns the rights now does still have commercial interest in this game). But when speaking to the letter of the law, then yeah, I must state it like that... (I hate it, though).

If you are interested in a little game history and if you don't mind old graphics, but just some good old fun, well, then download this game. (btw, I liked the sound track. Reminds me a bit of the Wild Arms RPG series, though).
