Remember that time you got yourself a Wii? At this point, it feels like everyone has had a Wii, and if you don't have one you probably do, maybe it came with your house! It's probably hiding somewhere ooooo go find it ooooo.
Regardless, the Wii was a massive success through and through thanks to a lot of factors but the main one being the Wii Remote and the ability to move it and... play! Crazy right?
A lot of companies tried to replicate and go the next step with motion controls or controls that track your movement, but the Nintendo Wii always felt like the one that did it the best.
Nowadays, motion controls aren't a lot of people's cup of tea, and that's understadable but I find the enjoyement out of these things a lot! Even when playing games like Mario Kart Wii, i play with the Wii Remote and not a regular controller because it adds to the experience!
In order to showcase the concept of motion controls, Nintendo made sure to make a game that allows the players to learn them so quickly, almost like they were using a racket or pitching or boxing...
Things you may do in real life, you can do in a videogame and suddenly play, with no buttons pressed as well besides for menus.
It's also worthy mentioning the first game Miis were introduced, everyone loves Miis, such a cool way to design avatars.
When you combine these you get Wii Sports, which would essentialy be a free tech demo that it's included with the Wii. Result? Being one of the most played games of all time. But I got a question for you, do you think this game is all that great?
Answering that question is difficult due to the game being a tech demo so the ranking and reviewing can be different than a regular title, but the best way I can describe Wii Sports is...
"Not anyone's favourite, but everyone's memory."
It makes sense because everyone remembers this game with fondness and love, and lots of people played it, but is anyone really praising it? No, not really.
Wii Sports is a good game but at the end of the day it is a tech demo, and a tech demo, and it just feels like a game that is just doing the minimum to have something interesting about it, because at the end of the day, this is a videogame
Wii Sports is a game that doesn't really have a lot of issues but it's highs aren't all that impressive. Heck, even some of the sports are... strange and a bit too uncustomizable.
Tennis is always a 2vs2, but you have the option to choose how many points both teams have to score to win the game.
Baseball, you don't have the points option and you can't really do much outside of pitching and bat, it's pretty limited and it's gameplay-loop becomes repetitive after a bit.
Bowling is pretty ok, it's probably the best one in multiplayer but maybe the worst in singleplayer since you aren't against someone unlike the other sports.
Golf is a bit of the same thing but this one feels more strategic than the other ones, altho some of the motion controls feel a bit wonky at times.
And Boxing, is pretty ok and surprisingly robust in it's mechanics but some of it's motion controls can be a bit wonky like Golf.
A lot of these kinda just do the job for simple games and simple fun, but I just can't stop thinking about some of these issues kinda ruin the sports a few times, but Nintendo was pretty kind making this tech-demo a multiplayer experience; and those 2 words can change your perception of Wii Sports.
Wii Sports can be played in different ways but it kinda depends on how others play to make you feel like you are playing it "correctly". These type of games suffer issues from being a tech-demo, and usually these are focus on some sort of demonstration of a gimmick or mechanic, and because of this, Wii Sports can be a surprisingly fun game or a surprisingly boring game. It is a good example of how company and "tricking you" can change how you see the game, and while that may be it's biggest strength it may also be it's biggest weakness.
For the most part, Wii Sports simply works and does what it tries to do very well, it achieves it's purpose with success I would say, and thankfully the game doesn't stop there!
The game offers a variety of training minigames, which contain a ranking system of medals, from Bronze to Platinum to make sure you master these 5 sports with success, teaching you the basics and getting to the controls of Wii Sports to 1-up yourself in this experience. Additionally, by playing these sports you get points to get harder opponents and climb up this ladder until you beat the champion of all the sports. This game just wants you to replay it over and over and that is definitely something that does incredibly well.
Another thing I want to mention is it's music, because I gotta say it does use it's very miniscule soundtrack extremely well. Using music when it needs it and not using it when it doesn't need it, as well as being a casual vibe that just works for the simpleness of this game.
Wii Sports is a weird mix of being a tech-demo but it is also trying to feel like more than a tech-demo, like an actual, more solidified game and I appreciate when games like these do that, thus, I think Wii Sports is a pretty solid game.
Unfortunately it isn't all that impressive since it's just a tech-demo and it can be divisive depending on how you decide to play it.
Is it an extremely good game? No
Is it an amazing first look at one of the most successful consoles of all time while being a fun game on it's own? Hell yeah!!
It is simply a Wii's classic.
